Tips on layering bass for brostep?

having one sub is a common sense but
how about the mid range and high range bass ??

for example i tried after watching flux pavilion bass tutorial and datsik bass tutorial on youtube
when i resample two bass lines i made from watching those videos with a sub , it sounds horrible
any tips ?

also when im resampling, should i just resample simple notes without lfos?? since after i resampled it and put it through ableton's simpler LFO, it gets muddy

It's just a case of practice, practice, practice I'm afraid. If you've got the basics from the videos, then keep trying different variations on a them until you get something that is workable.

hey there,

you need to seperate the freuqncies properly and make sure that there is room for all basses, snare (200hz punch) and the kick.
make sure that your basses don't layer in frequencies. for example do it like this: sub bass 30-90 hz, mid bass 90-300 hz and a cut at around 200 hz for the snare plop.
Something I do usually: Route basses to a group, add a compressor and side-chain the bass group slightly with the kick.
another tipp: cut out the deep bass of the kick with a lowcut at around 60-70 hz.

Sorry mate, but I don't fully understand how to do this, a mate of mine sent me a file telling what frequencies to cut all my different elements at but I don't have any understanding of how to do it, would I use a graphic eq or something along those lines? would you mind explaining it to me because i think it would make a serious difference to my tunes...cheers budd

Basically you want to route the bass channel to three (that's just the common number) aux channels, label them hi, mid and low then split the frequencies accordingly i.e. aux 1 - low, so cut/low pass at around 90 hz using either a filter or parametric EQ, aux 2 - mid, bandpass between 90 & 500 hz for example, so on and so forth.

Also make sure you set the original channel doesn't have a stereo output i.e. isn't going to the master out, so the whole signal goes through your aux busses. Personally I then route those three aux busses into a forth buss to 'reform' the bass line.

So, create 3 aux busses - route bass channel via sends to each of the three busses - insert a filter/EQ to each channel an cut low, mid and hi appropriately - don't forget to make sure the original channel is ONLY running through the aux's, not out - and finally, if you want to, route those three busses to a fourth buss.

After you have the basic set up, you can then go mad with effects etc on the mid's and hi's, and get creative.

Compress bass if it sounds good. Sub bass needs to be side-chain compressed if it falls on the kicks (imo it sounds cleaner cause the kick+bass can muddy up the track).

From listenin to tons of 'brostep' it sounds like theres not just bass but some melody in there too so maybe they make the melody line and then resample and drop a few parts down an octave to play back and forth between a nice melody and dirty bass (feed me and skrillex got this down pat). Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend (Feed Me Remix) sounds like that. Btw amazing track, on repeat all day

are you using massive? just put up the unison a couple voices to beef up the sound. And brostep? wtf? no such thing it's all dubstep. what kind of genre is called f**king brostep?

You don't need a sub for brostep.
Just layer up 5 or 6 different instances of Massive and high-pass filter the master bass channel at around 100Hz.
