drum samples

Post by RmoniK » Tue Feb 22, 2011 3:00 pm

Aight. So, i've got issues. I'm sick of downloading half a million samples to find out that only three of them are worth something, and even then. I haven't been able to find one decent sample bank that consists of more then 2 kicks that are actually pretty worthless.

I want to find out what you guys, as experienced filthsteppin producers, use in your song. I just need a few drum samples. A few kicks, a bunch good and heavy snares (goddamn those are hard to find) and some hihats. I'd really like them to be free, but they can cost a bit too, i'm desperate enough at this point.

Also, Rusko explains in his masterclass that he layers his snares with white noise to make it sound fuller and more sustainy. I want to try the same thing but i have no idea how to start with it. I've been experimenting and it sounds like crap. I use Logic.

Much appreciated.

i feel your pain OP but i don't have a solution for your problem. especially with kicks i seem to have my harddrive full of countless useless samples. i'm gonna try using the best bits i find to create my own drums/percussion.

basically my plan is to gradually add tons of SUBLTE processing: compressors, tube saturation, EQ, repitching and all that jazz. then export the different stages, listen to the bunch of samples i end up with again a couple days later and sort out what i like.

that way i'll end up with unique percussion, breakbeats et cetera.
(my kicks would still suck though :6: )

that 5000 sample thingie actually is rather good. The good:bad ratio is higher than in your regular sample packs. Thanks!

and hasezwei, that's what i plan to do, but if your sample sucks in the first place...

I keep seeing the words "useless samples" No samples are entirely useless.

but come on there's not ONLY crap. i mean even if you're picky you can get a couple houndred building block type sounds out of that 5000 drumhits pack. add to that the 1-10% decent enough sounds from the rest of your samples (plus must haves like 808's, 909's, all the classic breakbeats and their single hits) and there's already a lot to work with.

i'd prefer some quality shit to work with though, so i second your initial request :m:

pretty much all my drums are form that 5000 pack. The 'snares' folder within the 'various drums' folder has got some really nice snares (surprisingly) in there. The meanbeat pack is pretty decent aswell.

Might seem obvious, but a pitch envelope on a short sine sample, then tweaking the pitch/various other things can result in some really nice results if you want a kick. And best of all, it's freeeeeeee

I would look into using the Vocoder in your snare samples. Like you said Rusko explained in his 'masterclass' video, a little bit of noise in the snare hits can go a long way for that long - duration snare hit you're looking for. Another technique I use is layering the affected snare (the one with the reverb, vocoder noise, etc) on it against the original unnafected snare. Adjust volumes of each accordingly to get the feel you want.

Hope this helps,
Lopht

I found this sample pack recently http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/andy ... -here.html which has some fantastic snares, toms and cymbals (it's a metal sample pack so the kicks are far more clicky than I like but some of them are usable).

I think these are pretty easy to find but I like quite some of the kickdrums out of the sample pack called "die bassdrum ruven" found here:
