Absolutely. A well trimmed and targeted list of recipients is going to be more fruitful than the anyone-and-everyone shotgun approach that some people take. Even so called PR pros seem to be sending stuff that's not relevant out.

A small list with the right people is ideal, especially for working up relationships with your recipients. The more you converse with them - without being a pest, the more likely they'll recognise the name and check your tunes.

I also think it's important to not send a track straight out after you've finished it. I always get too excited about a track that I've finished and send it to a few people, and then realise that it's not completely finished. Maybe leave the track for a week or two and listen back to it, and see if there is any changes needed. Don't get too carried away.

Great article.

I listen to everything I get sent , if it doesn't appeal to me within the first 16 bars I turn it off. I get sent at least 250+ tracks a month so getting time to check everything is hard but I do get around to it , mailing me every 2 days asking if I checked it wont make me check your tune tune any faster , If I like your stuff... I will be on to you.
Also I wish people would actually check that type of tunes I put out , there is no point in sending me wobble/lfo/filth type tunes(I hate that shite) , generic mala/2562/joy orbison tribute band type tunes as that's not very interesting.
If your really positive that the tune you made is up to scratch... get it mastered, You can do this for very cheap , I have seen people on here offering mastering for £10 a tune.

They forgot to list putting "Please Listen My Demo" in the subject header when sending emails to prospective label managers.

Works like a charm.

wicked post.

as someone who used to run labels i can only agree with all the points made.

as a producer getting into the scene (from other ones) its always useful to remind yourself of them as well.

as scenes evolve and grow it's great to see people working at the coal face to help people out. thankyou.

and i can vouch for DFRNT's feedback, i've had some great feedback off him and some other people. It's worth remembering, as a producer, that getting negative feedback is GREAT. the fact someone you (presumably) respect took the time to talk to you about one of the many tunes they get sent means your tune has at least a bit of 'something' that makes them want to help you out with it.

And, with this small list, send personal emails rather than one group email with bcc (or even sometimes cc!!).

Tagging, quality and bit-rate are my top 3 most important. Private soundcloud uploads are always good, speedy downloads too.

If you're looking for exposure with a blog/website, make sure you have some interesting information about yourself/the track(s), even just a brief description of the sound.

Great article Alex. Will re-post now.
