I can't agree with you more. You put it really well thanks man!therook wrote:That's the cool part about production. There is not really a time limit in order to finish. We make music, not cars. Its not really an exact since but I can tell you from experience that I have read countless forum posts, tutorials, pdf's, magazines, etc. and I still don't know what the heck I'm doing. lol. Just do it for you. Chances are if you like it, someone else will too.

Re: Time it takes
Just a thought though, and i noticed this recently. Dont completely disregard your early failures. Sometimes the fact that you had no idea what you were doing led to uniqe and creative things that are easy to forget after you start "knowing what your doing"
I was looking back at some of my early stuff, and although from a technical level were terrible, there were elements of creativity and energy that some of my new stuff was lacking.

Re: Time it takes
^can definately agree with that, sorta like the thought process and how you went about things was way different than say when you know what your doing.

Re: Time it takes
making OK tunes requires so much understanding of so much dumb technical crap that once you've developed a method of navigating that crap in a way that produces adequate results it becomes very difficult to ditch it all, learn new methods and start over again
and then you get caught in a rut

Re: Time it takes
This. So much this. Try and hold onto that initial creative energy as much as possible because you don't wanna get to the point where you can no longer reclaim it. Recently I've been trying to get that back into my tunes by making some stuff totally different to my everyday dubstep/garage tracks and I'm a million times more proud of the new material than anything else I've done recently. Only trouble is it's so ambient/experimental it's not really fit for mainstream audiences but I sure had a great time making it!briskisgoodforu wrote:there were elements of creativity and energy that some of my new stuff was lacking.

1 month? Of course its gonna be complete crap. No offence dude. A good idea would be to use samples/loops for your first few tracks. That way you can already have a decent melody laid out which gives you more time to focus on learning bass techniques and automation. The first year is usually the most frustrating.melodium747 wrote:haha I haven't lost interest at all, I've become damn near obsessed lol I was just getting a little pissed / disappointed that all of the things I've made so far have been complete crap. If you're losing interest after a month man I'd just give up right now. I've been doing this for just over 2 years and I'm still shit and hate 98% of everything I make. It's a LONG uphill struggle learning to produce. You gotta accept that and grit your teeth or move on.
Come on mate, chin up and get back to work!

I strongly disagree. The best way to learn how to do something is by doing it, not by using pieces other people have made.REAP3RMusic wrote:1 month? Of course its gonna be complete crap. I agree completely. Taking a sound apart and trying to replicate it can be useful though. Personally I for me that of id ever gotten comfortable using premade loops of anything its a habit I wouldn't have gotten out of.paravrais wrote:I strongly disagree. Instead of worrying about making a complete tune work it a piece at time. Worrying about completing songs can make learning the basics so much more frustrating because you simply won't have the skills or knowledge at first.
I've been dabbling for around five years and made huge leaps recently by digging thru the forums and youtube tutorials. Next on the menu is learning some music theory for me.

Practice is the real secret, I think, just practice as much as you possibly can. Still, sometimes its discouraging when you see a producer who hasn't been producing for very long and sounds much better than you

						Re: Time it takes
Been producing for maybe a month tops -- the fact that my beats don't sound as good as the pros only encourages me to keep experimenting, learning and creating. Not that I expect them to sound half decent anytime soon.
The more I stray from Ableton's clip view, the more I begin to produce songs as opposed to quick beats.
Also, listening to, and attempting to produce, a wide variety of genres is extremely healthy for creativity, if you ask me. But, this is all new to me, so what do I know.
