New MacBook Pros and Thoughts on Lightpeak/Thunderbolt.....

Post by dubmatters » Thu Feb 24, 2011 2:55 pm

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

With apples new MBP's released today they have included the Lightpeak/Thunderbolt Technology developed alongside intel.

Do you think any audio equipment manufactures will jump on this? And will there be any tangible benefits, aside from the increased I/O bandwidth?

I can feel that it will go the same as firewire.

Yeah I think its a step in the right direction. My decision choosing a mac and firewire in general was to be able to daisy chain devices together. So yeah Im pretty keen to see it in action.

HOLY FUCK, that is some major throughput. Like not even joking. I'm terrified of the day when this technology looks as slow and limited as serial connections.

i'm assuming all pc's and mac's will have it within a year and it will become the defacto connection type for all audio interfaces.

10 gigabytes per second is no joke. blows everything else out of the water.

If I wasn't so skint I'd order me one of these. As it is, I don't even have USB 3 yet.

Yeah USB 3 is in trouble now because of this. I think USB 3 will become big but Thunderbolt will replace firewire.

Well I think firewire is pretty much done already. You can still use it and everything but I don't know if anyone is making new products with firewire? USB 3 is the same connector as always right? I think USB had a shot for the fact USB is such a standard now. Not just for computers either. Cars are coming with USB ports now. And all the hardware they have made for all these years is not just going to go away. A lot of the sound cards and controllers etc last longer than the PC's they are attached to usually. So I'd say USB is pretty safe. I am sure we will see this stuff pop up in high end stuff soon enough.

More importantly, this is replacing the old video output on the old macbooks, so there's really no downside to this.

This is the replacement for firewire seeing how bad it failed, nothing can compete with USB, its far too popular.

They are relesing octocore CPU's later this year, if that makes you happy ;-)

I just hope it won't be another case of the superior technology not being the most popular.

i wouldn't say firewire failed, at any given time it was the better standard than usb and though usb was clearly more popular, there was no shortage of firewire ports on macs/pc's, nor of firewire peripherals. I've only ever had firewire audio interfaces. I mean is is still around today even.

that said thunderbolt is twice as fast as the best usb3 can put out, and while apple developed it, they developed it with intel so it will surely be available for the vast majority of windows based pc's in the coming years.

I have never had firewire anything. The biggest problem with it was it didn't come standard on hardly anything. Once Apple dropped it, forget about it. I also heard that there were come inconsistencies with it like some powered some not. Different pins. Just because you had firewire and a firewire device didn't mean it was going to work. Not 100% sure of any of this but I was shopping for a card at one point and I was a little confused as to what to get. Ended up just getting a USB2 device.
