Nah, naaaaa...you've missed my point.
Here we have a mainstream clubbing culture where each town has 2/3 (or more, depending on size) clubs (like 'Liquid' that was mention previously, Oceana etc), that will pack out weekly. They don't play genre specific music, just the stuff that's in the charts and possibly a bit of trancey dance. These are the so-called meat markets.
Now, I ask as 1. I've no idea if you do, and 2. It seems the people that flock to the Dubstep nights over there are the same sorts of people that just go to these sorts of clubs over here. I don't mean that in a bad way...they gotta go somewhere, right?
I've always got the impression most people go to bars in the US and not clubs...thus, the clubbing experience is more of a novel one.
I have nothing to base that idea on, as I've never been to the US. I'm simply asking. Please do (I know you will) tell me if I'm wrong.
Ah I get you now. Well, I can really only speak from personal experience, and honestly I've never been into those type of meat market clubs... though I have been to a few over the years. There is a bit of info here

I really don't think there is that much of a difference. I know there is a large culture like that here, though I'm sure not every city, and I suspect more cities do have bar scenes rather than club scenes. I think it depends largely on the demographics. Cities with big universities nearby probably have the more active "mainstream" club scenes as those types of places attract a largely under-30 crowd.
There are loads of clubs with DJs who play chart music too, and most clubs have a healthy mix of music throughout the week. Miami, LA/SF and some other parts of California, Chicago, Philly, New York, Jersey are known as places with a big club culture. I haven't spent enough time in the other cities to accurately judge the mainstream club scenes, even in the UK... straight to the dnb & dubstep nights (can't blame?), so maybe someone else can give a better perspective. I'll say Austin has what you described though. It is focused more on live music, both bands and DJs/live performance, but there are clubs where people go to meet and hang out that cater to every type of music, including chart music.
The music of Austin, Texas, USA has gone beyond 6th Street and now includes other areas such as Red River, the University of Texas, the Warehouse District and Downtown, South Lamar, South Austin, East Austin and the Market District where bars and clubs of every kind can be found. Every night over one hundred venues stage live music. Austin's official motto is the "Live Music Capital of the World".
