I mean really, hating on glowsticks? what's wrong with them? is it lame for me to bring them to a show just because they were popular 15 years ago and now they're just not in vogue? Fuckin hell. Maybe I like dancing with them. Maybe I want to jump on stage and move cause that's how the music speaks to me.
I made two points about glowsticks:
One was about a guy waving a glowstick at an Autechre show. While MJ wanted his music to be experienced with dancers, lights, pyrotechnics, etc., Autechre wanted their music to be experienced in a pitch black room. As such, I found the one guy jumping around waving a glowstick pretty distracting.

The other comment was about a glowstick hula hoop. I personally found it out a place, but my real problem is that when someone decided to do that, they take up a lot of space on an already small dancefloor relative to your average club-goer.

still confused why we're trying to compare US to UK. We're 30 times the size of the UK with 8 times the population....meaning we're much more sparsely populated.... our country has insanely different cultures varying from state to state, have wide varieties of music not found on your half of the globe, completely different fashions, vocabulary, laws, rituals, religious sects, political beliefs, we're a much more racially diverse culture and have influences relevant to that fact, the average age of someone in the UK is 39.6 the average age of someone in the USA is 36.8 ..... Completely different cultures all together.

It's natural to assume we're completely different and our partying habits are a wee bit different.

Shows are meant to be geared towards the audience. If an artist really doesn't want glowsticks (which is still fuckin dumb), they should make that clear. I think i've heard of shows like that but I could be wrong.

Hula hoops and break-dancing are entirely contextual. If you're really that worried about being crammed between a bunch of people, why would you go to a show in the first place? even in jam-packed clubs i've seen people make space for some neat dance battles

the shitty thing about plush and barcelona, is you're ALWAYS in the way of someone wanting to go to the bathroom.

a firm should hire 10 serious djs/promoters/club goers to ergonomically design a club so that the bar and bathroom isn't directly in contact with a packed dancefloor. you wanna go outside and smoke? fine, but i still wanna dance and not wear my drink on my shirt.

I am also curious about this.
Of course, but it's so spread out. Every state has at least one city with good weekly club nights, dubstep and otherwise. LA/SF, Miami, NYC, Austin/Houston seem to be standing out in those areas as far as dubstep is concerned. There's more of course, but I'm speaking from personal experience, I haven't been everywhere. I've been to so many dnb and dubstep nights in or around Austin in the last 10 years that were just unforgettable. The DJs from overseas I've chatted with before or after always have great things to say. FWIW, those crazy pseudoraves with extreme lighting definitely aren't the norm. I'm sure most of you guys would feel familiar at most regular club nights.
Nah, naaaaa...you've missed my point.

Here we have a mainstream clubbing culture where each town has 2/3 (or more, depending on size) clubs (like 'Liquid' that was mention previously, Oceana etc), that will pack out weekly. They don't play genre specific music, just the stuff that's in the charts and possibly a bit of trancey dance. These are the so-called meat markets.

Now, I ask as 1. I've no idea if you do, and 2. It seems the people that flock to the Dubstep nights over there are the same sorts of people that just go to these sorts of clubs over here. I don't mean that in a bad way...they gotta go somewhere, right?

I've always got the impression most people go to bars in the US and not clubs...thus, the clubbing experience is more of a novel one.

I have nothing to base that idea on, as I've never been to the US. I'm simply asking. Please do (I know you will) tell me if I'm wrong.
I don't turn on Korn to get it on, I be playin Digi Mystikz 'til the dawn

Ah I get you now. Well, I can really only speak from personal experience, and honestly I've never been into those type of meat market clubs... though I have been to a few over the years. There is a bit of info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightclub#1990s_and_2000s | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rave#United_States

I really don't think there is that much of a difference. I know there is a large culture like that here, though I'm sure not every city, and I suspect more cities do have bar scenes rather than club scenes. I think it depends largely on the demographics. Cities with big universities nearby probably have the more active "mainstream" club scenes as those types of places attract a largely under-30 crowd.

There are loads of clubs with DJs who play chart music too, and most clubs have a healthy mix of music throughout the week. Miami, LA/SF and some other parts of California, Chicago, Philly, New York, Jersey are known as places with a big club culture. I haven't spent enough time in the other cities to accurately judge the mainstream club scenes, even in the UK... straight to the dnb & dubstep nights (can't blame?), so maybe someone else can give a better perspective. I'll say Austin has what you described though. It is focused more on live music, both bands and DJs/live performance, but there are clubs where people go to meet and hang out that cater to every type of music, including chart music.
The music of Austin, Texas, USA has gone beyond 6th Street and now includes other areas such as Red River, the University of Texas, the Warehouse District and Downtown, South Lamar, South Austin, East Austin and the Market District where bars and clubs of every kind can be found. Every night over one hundred venues stage live music. Austin's official motto is the "Live Music Capital of the World". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Austin

Bostons been getting some pretty decent acts lately. In the past month alone we've had 2562, Martin Kemp, and Martyn. Although I do agree Skrillex, Bassnectar, and the artists from that scene seem to be the ones getting all the attention over here unfortunately.

And I don't really have a problem with glowsticks at a rave or festival, but I can def see why they're annoying in a club atmosphere.
