Need a teacher or someone who can help me start dubstep.

Post by flOw » Tue Mar 01, 2011 12:23 am

Hi, I'm really into Dubstep, and I'm motivated every day to make my own remix's/tunes, I need some pointers, Whats some good software, What does LFO stand for, What does it do, Etcetc.

I want to make dubstep like this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivW8f8hfbAg

Anyone know good software and is anyone dedicated to teach?

I looked at the "START MAKING DUBSTEP" thread or whatever, But all those software have unique sounding beats and what not, I want a specific program that can do these kind of beats, I tried FL Studio, It became a pain because I didn't know how to make the sound longer or remix a song.

My msn : Mattisholy@hotmail.com

Really think you should find someone local to you to get you started, then I think you should spend a couple of years working really hard and doing a shit tun of research.

This aint school, you are your own teacher. Seek the information you need.

Firstly, nobody round here uses msn, I'd hop on AIM if I were you, industry standard.

The thread you mentioned really does have all the information you're looking for. It just takes a while to read through it all and find what's right for you but we all had to do it when we started out and to be honest reading those threads is gonna be the least difficult and time consuming part of learning to produce XD

As for which DAW (software to make music with - Digital Audio Workstation) is best for you to start using, well they can all get the same results in the end, it all depends on how you like to work and which program suits your workflow the best. So you should download demos of as many as you can and see which feels most natural to you. We could only give you the recommendation of the program each of us uses but that's no use to you because what suits me might not suit you. No matter what you start off with you won't be able to make anything even remotely listenable for at least 6 months and it will be years before you make anything that is actually good. So be prepared for that before you dive in, don't get angry after 2 weeks and come back here demanding that we tell you the 'magic secret' you're missing that will suddenly make you sound like a professional. Cos it don't exist.

i kind of agree with noway, i tried one dubstep track about a month and a half ago when my interest peak finally peaked, it was ok for a first try, but since then the only thing ive focused on is knowledge practically. im working on a track but its gonna be a month or so longer before it will be finished. knowledge is the only thing that will progress you here and interest/searches will fuel that with ease!

Thanks for all the quick replies, As for the "Local" comment, Theres no one in California that I know of that actually Produces Dubstep, I know people that listen to it a lot, But none that actually can produce it, I think I'm going to take Paravrais's idea, And download a bunch of demo, see which one I actually feel comfortable with :), These comments have been really helpful, Thanks a lot!

You're going to have to start somewhere. A lot of guys use Massive (DAW/VST) for dubstep wobble sequencing, but it would have taken me forever to figure it out if I didn't have a background in Reason and Ableton Live. Youtube tutorials will become your best friend, and this forum will become your asshole friend who happens to be right more often than not.

Step 1: Throw Away Your Computer
Step 2: Move to Cambodia (a.k.a. Learn To Get Dirty)
Step 3: Go Find Your Computer and BUY Fruity Loops. (keyword: buy)
Step 4: Log back onto dubstep forum and ask questions that have already been asked hundreds of times.
Step 5: You're a dubstep producer (In your mother's eye, your special!)

that's a sick reggae dub mix btw yo. That's the shit I'm into.

you should check out this...it's mad old...but who the fuck cares!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr21MblV0Bw

Rusko & Caspa both have alot of reggae influence, and thats what I'm into. Mad people on DSF hate on them, but I honestly find them both absolutely fantastic. Although they havent been doing much this year, I still think they are gonna come back to blow everyone away with a Fabriclive 37 Vol.2...fingers crossed.

But to seriously answer your question, BUY Fruity Loops. Then sit on Fruity Loops, read the manual and mess with it until you actually start figuring things out.

Most people will tell you FL Studio sucks for dubstep...but believe me...no matter how much it sucks it's still the best DAW to begin with, because you will get into Reason, Ableton, or ProTools and be like :u: trying to figure things out.

It's like riding a bike...you cant ride a motorcycle without starting with a tricycle.

No, it is not. People catch shit when the know nothing and post with major attitude. This op did not. Why does no one understand why some people catch shit, and others receive valuable information? Learn your manners, respect the people around you, and you will be treated well. The internets iz rill life.

Hype, Ogun what area are you guys from? No pedo.

You guys are in high school? I'm thinking of volunteering to teach a class on computer music production afterschool at my old high school, you think students would be interested?
