Not a fan but..

I just have nothing against her. She's not trying to appeal to all of you. Don't understand the hate, she's just a pop star what do you expect? At least she's got musical talent in some forms. I really don't get why you think you're all so much better then her..

You don't have to think you're better than someone to dislike what they do.

I dislike Steve Vai but I don't think I'm a better guitarist than him.

I wouldn't take any offence to her music, but people try big her up as if she's something different, as if it isn't just mindless drivel condensed into pop music. Seems like the same old shit to me, maybe with a bigger budget and some 'good' marketing.

This.

The music you're listening to when you first start flirting with the opposite sex, getting into trouble with your mates, driving your first car, losing your cherry... the first tunes you heard on club systems... the first tune you danced with a girl to at school... those songs WILL stay with you, no matter what the quality.

That Jimmy Somerville, to me, is terrible music... but I have no connection to it, and I'm guessing capo does - when I was a kid in the early 90s, that sound was about as far from "cool" as you could get. We were all out of tune guitars, breakbeats and floppy hair by then. But similarly, from a technical point of view, I can't say much to defend Green Day - Dookie as an album; it doesn't stop it being my favourite of all time because of what I was doing when I first listened to it.

I've even got a soft spot for Take That- Back For Good because of a chick called Ellie at a youth club disco when I was about 14.

If you're not appreciating more than just the sound you're hearing, you're not doing it right.

Ya.
Anywho this song is trying to send a message to a massive core of her audience, of course it's shit to us, we listen to bass/dubstep (and some other stuff of course). But she's trying to send a positive message to be proud of who you are..especially living in a world where many are homophobic/racist. As marketed as it is, and obviously so, this might be a real consolation for a 10 year old boy who knows he's gay. I don't know, I just like playing devil's advocate.

Yeah, maybe you're right there. I think my main problem is the fact that she hides behind a pseudo-ethos, going on like she stands for shit when she's just trying to make as much dolla as pos.
At least in my day the industry churned out artists like Kylie were just singing about being lucky in love etc I reckon the problem started with the Spice Girls and 'Girl Power'. A nifty little catchphrase that meant nothing but somehow attached them to the feminist struggle even though they were still just prancing about, scantily clad, in their music videos.
I have no real problem with gaga. I am lucky enough to have a job and life where i'm not forced to listen to her. I just have a problem with people in this ever increasingly materialistic society indoctrinating kids with fake 'messages' just to get paid.
If you listen to gaga and you like it but know she stands for nothing, fair enough I have no problem with that. If a kid listens to her and thinks they can become rich/famous while standing for something by thrusting their crotch at a camera, well, that i'm not too comfortable with.

Maybe, but I expect even pop music to have lyrics above a 10 year olds comprehension level. I also wouldn't want any ten year olds watching Lady Gaga's strange, hyper-sexualized music videos.

Why not? Why's it ok for boys to be obsessed with sex and not girls? Humans really fucking like sex. I don't see why we should feel worried about girls being exposed to images of female masturbation and ideas of women being proud of their sexual desires when we are quite happy to giggle with nostaligia about the young lad finding his first copy Penthouse stuffed in a hedge and keeping it under his matress. (Actually, I dread to think what the average 11 year old boy has access to these days on his bedroom PC - no need for the hedgerow porn-fairy anymore! )

Young people are almost all interested in sex. It's what growing up is largely about.... it's pretty natural. Forcing kids to deny their sexuality until they're in the big bad real world with no space to experiment - that's how you breed the sort of society-wide self esteem and sexuality issues we saw with women for centuries.

Not disagreeing with any of this, but 10 years old is pre-pubescent. 13, 14, etc it's all good, but 10 years old is really fucking young.

Or to put it another way, some kids might equate faining masturbation on TV with becoming famous. You are right Magma, kids should be comfortable with their sexuality and their ability to experiment. I just think pop stars trying to sell cd's should stay out of that. As you said "Young people are almost all interested in sex." and i'm saying 'sex sells'....

All solid points here..

This is the way manufactured pop music is, and this is the way it's going to be. I had to grow up with the whole late 90's boy band/bubble gum pop star era, I saw Britney Spears knockers in a white shirt on a rainy day, I saw Christina Aguilera dry humping her back up dancers when she was DRRTTYY. I've been exposed to hyper-sexualized video's as a girl, did it affect me on a deeper level? Of course not..I'm fine.
magma wrote: Not everyone has the interest in music to dig for it and they're happy to trough on whatever's provided... it's nice the industry occasionally shows a bit of personality... it could get away with a lot duller than Gaga.
That sums it up. It's like having to choose between the lesser of two evils.

Shit pop music..shit pop music with a message.

@64hz kids know when they're gay..

haha, I must have been getting old when I was 16, because the same exact shit was out then, and it was still shit.

And beyond that, I think the music now is better than when I was a kid. Not that there wasn't incredible music being made back then, it was just harder to learn of, harder to find, and there was less of it.
