Frequency Splitting EQ Questions (2 Free Massive Patchs)

Post by MRP5 » Tue Mar 01, 2011 3:43 pm

I need desperate help on frequency splitting. Ive been really realizing lately that without this making quality dubstep is impossible. I wanted to know some of the frequencies you guys cut out from each -high -mids -lows. Im using logic so if anyone can recommend either a onboard EQ or plugin that would be great. Ive noticed everyone kinda has there own personal preference but I would like to see how you guys do it so I have a general area to start from. I am still at the beginning stages of production so I apologize if I have mis stated anything!

Here are 2 patchs Ive made a while back wanted to share with you who stopped by to help out, I would love to talk about a massive as well!!

Payment by patch what a nice idea. (can i have sikk datsikks bass please)

1) I dont think that making quality dubstep is impossible without freq splitting, it helps.

Do you use a freqency analiser (something that shows visually the sound (what you hear)) Using one of these has helped me out loads for finding the fundementals and seeing if any breaks have unwanted low end. Im sure logic has one but im not a logic user so dont know if it really does. A free one is Span by voxengo

My understanding of what your asking is just EQing,, You have your bass line,, on the frequncy graph it peaks around 100 (The fundemental) I think, its a nice sound but could be more weighty at the bottom. So i Eq with a Hi pass and Lo pass points so i can only hear around the 100 hz freqencie, ive cut out the lower sound and the higher sound. I then get my Sub playing, i play the same notes and go to my EQ, now i just Hi pass cut just after the 50hz mark. I make the curves of the cuts on the sub and mid bass so that when played together they dont sound muddy or overlapping. I then make a copy of the bass patch and hi-pass eq it above 100.

I now have 3 synths playing at 3 diffrent freqs low-sub Mid-bass Hi-bass copy hi passed. I can now limit/compress the sub to make it louder with out effecting the bass sounds (not advised as gain structure is better then using comp.limit, this was an example) i can put effects on the hi and mid bass without those effects ruinig my sub.

I (proberly wrongly) thought freq splitting was more an effect, that you have one sound and its missing every other bit of sound from its freq. like at 0:43 in this video.. (software is 29 dollers)

just found this. This is what you ment right? tuts in logic

exactly what he's talking about in that second tutorial. How he cuts frequencies depending on the lowest and highest note. Ive watched Reso's tutorial where he explains it ok. http://vimeo.com/19125495. Is there any type of chart or if someone can help me find something that explains this is in detail it would be much appreciated.

theres no definitive frequencies for this eq-ing. it all depends on the synth/patch/sample, so any numbers would be useless really. just use your ears.

having said that, if your just trying to split your synth into sub, bass and midrange. id say sub was 50ish down, bass up to about 500ish or something. mid above that.

i still think making your individual sub, bass and mid synths is better than freq splitting imo.

Thats intended, and Im aware every sound will have a different frequency so Im just looking for a ruff area to start, this is pretty new to me. I need to remove frequencies that are clashing because everything together sounds like mudd.. especially at the low end mid range synth's mess with my bassline
