ECF-42
can someone explain to me how to use this??
i hear its better than a lot of the other filters in reason or something?
do you have to manually turn the knob every time to make wubs?
is there a way for it to just be synced to the lfo on any given synth??

Re: ECF-42
I'm not sure why you were told it sounds better than the other filters, after all, it is the oldest filter in the program along with the identical filters in the NN-19 and Subtractor.
The filters on Kong or Thor are probably the best, certainly when judging by features alone.
To automate the filter parameters on the ECF, either draw in some automation on a sequencer track (which you'll need to create for it), attach a CV modulation source on the back or tie the controls to a Combinator knob.

Re: ECF-42
You can automate it by putting it in a combinator along with the synth you're using it with and doing some routing round the back but to be honest why would you want to? I think you've probably misunderstood some information you were given as the filters inside the synths are all better as 'filters' than the ECF and I would strongly recommend you use them for 'wobbles' but what a lot of people who use reason find is that the ECF is much better for high passing things than the EQ units. Especially the mclass EQ which is the biggest load of shite ever. I also strongly recommend the EQ feature in the vocoder, again much better than the specific EQ units. So yeah, to sum up you wanna use the inbuilt filters for wobbles etc but the ECF is great for EQing and so is the vocoder.
Hope that helps

Re: ECF-42
Try setting one up as an insert, making a channel for it and entering a few notes in a loop, its just gate on/off so notes dont matter.
Put the ENV.AMT up around halfway, whack the freq right down and play with the adsr, you will get some good sounds out of it.
You can even get a matrix, route the gate cv to the env.amt and do it that way, im sure theres loads more ways.
It sets up for more creative stuff that making a thor and LFO1 TO FILTER1 lameness.

i use the thor as a signal processor.
make it audio input to filter 3
make it audio input to filter 3

Re: ECF-42
i have seen a way in which the filter knob is moving without doing anything. no automation drawn in or anything.
like its just twisting back and forth at a certain rate.
it is inside a combinator! but id like to know how this happens and why it happens?
in fact, i may have got it from the reason thread here.
either way i guess its unimportant, since its not really useful for wubs.
thanks for the tips tho!

Re: ECF-42
I see
Yup, the ECF-42 filter cut off knob will have been assigned to one of the Combinator rotaries which itself is being modulated with a cv modulation input on the back.
Flip the rack round to check, or assign a Combi rotary to the ECF-42's filter frequency control and then attach the CV cable from a Subtractor LFO 1 output. You'll see it moving by itself.

I didn't think it offered hp?? been on Reason for ages, and coulda sworn it was lp12, lp24, or bp only. always pissed me off.

or even better filter 1 so you can use all three filters.makemerich wrote:i use the thor as a signal processor.

Re: ECF-42
I'm not sure that filter 1 on Thor accepts an external audio input. I think it only takes the internal signal from Thors oscillators...
But maybe I've missed something??

As far as I know it's not possible, only filter 3futures_untold wrote:I'm not sure that filter 1 on Thor accepts an external audio input. I think it only takes the internal signal from Thors oscillators...

Re: ECF-42
it is possible, just select 'audio input' on the matrix destination for filter 1. Unlike filter 3 doesnt have 'Left in' and 'Right in' but it stills works the same way. Just make two 'audio inputs' and route it the same way you would for filter 3.Project EX wrote:As far as I know it's not possible, only filter 3futures_untold wrote:I'm not sure that filter 1 on Thor accepts an external audio input. Sounds great
How does one make the 'audio inputs' you mention??

i worked this problem out filter 1 only works when thor is receiving cv. so just add a matrix and your good. You could even make sequences to trigger envolopes set at rythmic patterns. any way it works just needs cv for for some reason.

it doesnt have to be receiving cv.efence wrote:Project EX wrote:i did, no soundSinisterbeats wrote:it is possible, just select 'audio input' on the matrix destination for filter 1. heres an example patch to show the basic routing. You can also route it into filter 2 at the same time or however else you like I guess...
