I own Reason 5, my brother: Ableton Live
A copy of Reason 5 was given to me by work, its a not-for-resale copy which means I can't upgrade it in the future, but its the full featured version. Reason looks complicated as all hell and the interface is ridiculous, that and it doesnt support VSTs to my knowledge, so if I want more effects/synths than what it comes with (maelstrom, thor, etc) I wouldnt be able to do that.
Ableton looks beautiful, apparently runs extremely stable, and is great for live performance too if I ever make it to that point. Thing is, Ableton Live I dont think comes with ANY synths. I want to make electro house type music, and I'd love Synthesizers to make basslines and other effects.
If you think its worth shelling out the money for Operator, let me know. If Ableton supports free VSTs, let me know (and recommend some), because Ableton was pricey enough as it is and not coming with any synths is just crazy.
Thanks dudes!!

pretty sure abelton will come with some sort of synth. Reason is actually very easy to use and intuitive. You could always rewire Reason into Abelton so you can use Reasons synths in abelton along with any vsts you want. Yes abelton supports free vsts, check out kvraudio.com for a huge database of synths/fx.

Cool thanks man. Anyone else have Ableton VST recommendations?
Also, I dont mean to be rude, but I'm certain the version we have (Ableton Live) does not come with Operator, which is the synth Ableton comes with in the Suite package.

Worth it to spring for Ableton Live Suite IMO. The built in plugins are quite good.
Re: I own Reason 5, my brother: Ableton Live
Live doesn't come with any synths you're right but suite comes with a lot more than just Operator. You get Analog, Tension, Electric, Collision and a much better version of Simpler called Sampler.shadowprotocol wrote:Cool thanks man. Anyone else have Ableton VST recommendations?

But yeah, freeware does the job just fine and is plentiful. Some personal recommendations would be anything made by TAL, StringZ2, Oatmeal, Crystal, DSK Akoustik Keyz, The free 'player' versions of NI products, Cableguys Curve (though you can only have one instance per track without buying a full license), Chimera, Basic 64
And most importantly SQ8L and the GTG synths, both of these are *amazing* if you ask me. Not just good for freeware but good full stop. Get them.
EDIT: As far as non synth plugins go also check out Atlantis filter for well...filtering (and much more actually) and Ariesverb and Ambience for reverb.

Thanks for those recommendations.
I failed to mention I purchased during the holiday sale the full package of FL Studio 9. It came with a metric ****ton of VSTs (all of the expensive ones that people swear by including Sytrus Synth), but I havent installed it or learned how to use it yet.
I always see DAW forum wars, and people like to shoot down FL Studio. If I learn it and become proficient, can I be as successful using that as I am Ableton?

Hold the phone. You have Reason, your brother has Ableton and you've just bought FL?? Dude you have more than enough to start making some sick tunes. I'd hop in fruity and learn the ropes. No point laying down that much money and not putting some serious time into the program. There is nothing *missing* from the full FL package so don't worry about using anything external for a while. Learn what comes with it first and then in time you can try and expand.shadowprotocol wrote:Thanks for those recommendations.

Lol yea my brother is a DJ. We've got the Axiom Pro 49, Akai APC40 ableton controller, and we've got a bunch of turntables/mixers laying around.
I'd say I'm set as far as freakin gear goes, I just wanted advice on which DAW to focus on.
I think FL's bad rep comes from older versions, FL Studio 9 looks pretty awesome from what I've seen. This is my Account page:

It's the full FL Studio bundle + all the VSTs that an electro producer would probably want to use, I just have no idea how to operate FL Studio.
I'll put in the time and hard work that I admire all of you and my favorite artists for doing -- there are no shortcuts to success.

Skream uses FL and he's one of the most proficient producers around IMHOshadowprotocol wrote: I always see DAW forum wars, and people like to shoot down FL Studio. If I learn it and become proficient, can I be as successful using that as I am Ableton?

ableton operator is ill, especially when you start stacking them in an instrument rack.

I can't agree with you more. I'm pretty sure I like it better than massive.symmetricalsounds wrote:ableton operator is ill, especially when you start stacking them in an instrument rack.

I second that!melodium747 wrote:I can't agree with you more. I'm pretty sure I like it better than massive.

Massive doesn't seem as good to me compared.

FL is a pretty awesome DAW. Better than Cubendo, Pro Tools for making electronic music.shadowprotocol wrote: I always see DAW forum wars, and people like to shoot down FL Studio. If I learn it and become proficient, can I be as successful using that as I am Ableton?
If I were in your shoes, I would just start using FL, learn it inside out and start making tunes.
As for Reason, the way I see it, it's kinda like the software version of hardware workstations (Think Fantom, Oasys, Motif, Kronos).
So now, think of it like this: do you want to do your songs only in Reason, then export and mix in another DAW (and ll that hassle), or would you like to use one DAW and also have the option of adding versatility any time you want (by means of VST/VSTi plugins)? Sure you can rewire Reason into other DAW, but it is a kill to the workflow.

Re: I own Reason 5, my brother: Ableton Live
I'm currently making a decision between Ableton and FL Studio, but the option to switch is always there, which is nice. The upgrade from Live to Suite won't be that much, and I'll get Operator, Tension, Electro, etc, but to be honest I dont know what they all do (or how to use Ableton). Currently looking at options for the best way to learn how to use it. It comes with basic videos and a manual so that may be good enough :]
