quakes have nothing to do with an expanding core.
hot shit rises and cold shit goes down, which is what our tectonic plates are made from, at the edge of the plates on one side the hot stuff is coming up and creating splits(earthquakes here generally arnt that damaging) and on the otherside the cold rock is going down (these plates travel at about a maximum speed of 10cm a year.) and in some of these places the rocks get locked, over time tension builds up and eventually they snap....causing earth quakes etc. and where japan is located is where the plate is dipping beneath another instead of moving away (which is the case along LA california and chile) which is why the get Really strong quakes.

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
Thanks to all sending their thoughts to those affected out here.
It's been very scary the last few days; the earthquake itself was the most terrifying moment of my life - hands down. Genuinely thought I was gonna die alone in my apartment. I couldn't tell when the earth stopped shaking as my legs were still quaking for hours after the intital hit. The aftershocks continued for the whole day and will apparently hit for weeks to come. We had a particularly big one this morning and there's a 7.0 potentially hitting in the next couple of days
Have had all manner of messages of concern/support but post-quake Tokyo has been comparatively fine. Very little collateral damage but the way of life has been completely fucked by the halting of train services and current power shortages (which I'm thankfully not affected by in my area but mean further ceasing of trains). I've been mostly coping by going out and getting pissed. Sitting in front of a computer screen/tv listening to scaremongering is definitely not the one.
Now we have the threat of potential radioactive contamination upon us which is causing people to become very nervous. Many friends of mine are leaving the country or fleeing to the further reaches. Not being so impulsive I'm sticking it out. I would go and buy some brown rice and seaweed (meant to be very good for countering radiation poisoning) but my local supermarket is completely cleared out. I can't even get milk!!
Up north is another story entirely. As you've all seen, the destruction caused by the tsunami is ridiculous. Had one friend up there who is fine, but know other people who have yet to hear from people they know who may have been affected. Thoughts with those caught in the worst of it all.

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
I'm currently not in Japan, but have dozens of friends and colleagues over there, most in the Tokio/Chiba/Nagano and Osaka regions though. My former professors family lived in Sendai (he and his own family reside in Matsumoto, far from the danger zone). He has not had word from some of his relatives. I fear the worst.
I'm very relieved my close friends and their families are safe. But also saddened by the loss of so many lives. The entire Tohoku region has a lot of elderly people and there's no way they could reach higher grounds in time. The alarm worked but the tsunami reached the coast in a matter of minutes. In some area's the earthquake was still ongoing when the Tsunami hit.
I have seen so many childish and religious inspired remarks about this tragedy that have filled me with disgust. And I've also seen so much unjustified panic reactions a cross the world when there is no need for that.
Hope you all stay safe and the situation at the Fukushima reactor remains under control.
For me personally this entire crisis also has major consequences, especially economic. But those are nothing compared to the suffering sustained by the people in the affected areas.

They've just had another earthquake, 5.7 aftershock.

Apparently miso's good as well but on that point after Chernobyl people ended up being treated for eating too miso to counteract the radiation they'd experienced!sinc vision wrote:I would go and buy some brown rice and seaweed (meant to be very good for countering radiation poisoning) but my local supermarket is completely cleared out. Shit looks fucked from here but big up to the Japanese people's response to this, they've just sprung in to action and got back on with their lives

sad thing is our military has done much worse than bombing pearl harbor. Pearl Harbor was a military installation with minimal civilian casualties. We've bombed countless military installations over the years with much higher civilian death tolls.
Pretty sad people in our country have the nerve to make comments like that. Next time i take a piss in the burger king bathroom i'll be sure and sprinkle on the floor so these inbreeds will have to mop it up.

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
All right, so I'm not reacting to a specific post in this topic, but rather got a bit pissed off by the national news channel on reporting about this disaster.
First off, if you are going to quote a news agency, get its name right for fucks sake: I've seen a thousand variations pop up, but it's KYODO or 47NEWS. It's remarkable how little effort goes into that sort of thing.
Second: I've seen so many people from abroad outraged by the he local dealing of information on the nuclear issue. "The Japanese government isn't telling us everything, they have lied to us from the start". Things like that.
Well let me tell you, here in Europe you are half the globe away and have no rights to just ask these sort of questions in the first place. Now if you were in Japan, I understand one could get pissed off. But here? Grow the fuck up. Second, what do you expect them to report? Up to yesterday, no Lethal dose of radiation was spread anywhere, only the facility ground itself was faced with radiation doses that could cause radiation sickness. Only now have the doses reached a point where a man could possibly lose his fertility, and again only on site.
There was never any need to report anything so elaborate: you would only cause mass panic, mass hamstering and a further drop of the stock exchanges causing even more widespread crisis a cross Japan, Asia and possibly even the globe. The explosion was reported one hour after it happened, I think that's pretty good (it took several days in the Soviet Union remember anyone?).
What do you expect them to tell you? They were venting gasses that contained slightly radioactive material but when in contact with O2, these gasses drop their radioactive neutrons and dissipate after a short while. This had been the situation up to today and I think the government dealt with the press pretty good. Best and Worst case scenario's were briefed to the press. And mass panic was avoided to an extent. Now they're handing out Iodine pills over here!? I can see some crazy old woman locking herself up in sheer panic taking the iodine pills for no apparent reason.
I just think people are overreacting to the situation abroad and are once again acting very selfish. My opinion...
Thirdly, now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon AGAINST nuclear energy: fine, but where were you people last week? Oh that's right: enjoying laptops, heating, television, kitchen appliances, cars, street lighting, public transportation, house lighting, microwaves, refrigerators, hospitals, theme parks, aeroplanes etc. etc.
Now I can understand you are all for renewable energy, I am too. But you have to be realistic. In Western Europe several countries depend on nuclear energy for more than 50% of all their energy needs. I'm in Belgium and nuclear power plants provide us with 53% of our energy. And we import nuclear energy from France as well.
Renewable energy will require grave sacrifices people. On Earth, with current technology, we can currently only replace about 30% of the energy delivered by nuclear Power plants (if that is a correct figure, I'm guessing its less) with sources of renewable energy. Dams for example also do a lot of damage to the environment let's not forget . Windmills are still horribly ineffective. It would take huge surfaces filled with them. We would gravely have to cut down our energy spending, which will mean all sorts of sacrifices in the end nobody is willing to take. So don't get high and might and all "I told you so" yet.
Nuclear energy is relatively safe and better for the environment than say fossil fuels when managed correctly. We have had three noteworthy nuclear incidents in the history of mankind.
Tsjernobil : an illegal nuclear power plant that didn't have any of the required safety measures installed.
Pennsylvania : not an expert on that case
Japan : A 9.0 earthquake (possibly the 5th heaviest ever) and a 10 meter Tsunami hit this facility.
These are extreme and extraordinary circumstances. Granted, building nuclear power plants on fault lines was never a good idea. But if we can have them, why can't they?
