FEELINGS ABOUT DUBSTEP SCENE

Just my 2 cents...

I think one of the main problems is with people believing that Dubstep is, or indeed was, a homogeneous "scene", one that is somehow now non-existent, or rather tainted by the commercialisation of the sound. This problem is accentuated further I believe, by certain individuals trying to define themselves by their affiliation to this so-called "scene". It really annoys me when people say things such as, 'I wish it was still 06/07', because this is exactly the kind of attitude which just encourages division and hate within the music, causing it to stagnate. Seriously though, just look at the sheer quality and diversity of releases that are coming out on labels such as Osiris, Tempa, Swamp81, DMZ, Hessle Audio, Wheel and Deal, Black Box... The list goes on. In fact, I would even go as far as saying that this sort of attitude is just as damaging (and apologies for the use of a blatent stereotype here) as when the chainsaw bass bandwagon jumpers (and I'm not talking about everyone who likes this sort of sound here) come out with ignorant shit regarding the deeper stuff. For example, calling it 'boring', or 'slow', and often simply because they lack the appropriate speakers or headphones required in order to understand the quintessential concept of bassweight. Regardless of whether you were "there from the beginning", or indeed only discovered it last week, it is the true heads and music fans that really love this sound that will continue to push it, long after all the hype has worn off, and Dubstep is no longer the flavour of the week. The only way this can be achieved however is through unity and by going forward, not by constantly arguing over mundane topics concerning what constitutes Real Dubstep, and by tragically consigning ourselves forever to this mythical "golden era".

For real. As much shitty Brostep as there is these days there is still plenty of good bass pressure out there if you look in the right places.

There's definitely amazing music being made, i just wish i'd been hip to earlier sounds too
Mainly because i want to go out to a club and experience lots of deep n dark vibes instead of hyphy madness every time. I can't seem to catch a break with events :\

imo, i love dubstep, STILL!, and i also like glitch hop, i like electronic music - period. but when people talk about the scene needing to be more like it was in '04 or '05, that's as ridiculous as the weird bullshit on http://www.girlsgonewaldo.com (ive never used one of these corn guys, thought i'd do it now.)

dubkingdom, i hear over in the uk dubstep has completely saturated every nook and cranny... don't know from experience, but that's just what someone told me. is that true or completely ridiculous?

honestly i feel that im liking the newer tunes coming out in the 2009-2011 years better than the older ones. i deffinately like the heavier sound from the newer artists.

WHAT ABOUT A DUBSTEP EVENT THAT'S TAKES PLACE IN A MORE LOUNGY ENVIRONMENT? more comfy seats and tables than dance floor, but with all the big sound and proper acoustics and you can smoke as much as you want with your mates and have some beers and just vibe out all night. there could be dance floor, but have it quite small and closely surrounded by the tables and chairs (people will inevitably want to dance). more intimate and music oriented, you know? and have a relatively small number of people? personally that environment with someone spinning some medi style beats sounds like heaven to me. all the sound, all the focus and no elbows to the face. am i crazy?

Really interesting thought. Would come to that sort of thing if it was available near where I live.

I'm not really interested in scenes being too old to really give a fuck.

What I am interested in is the tremendous amount of very good new music that's being produced at the moment. 2010 was a fantastic year for releases and 2011 looks to be as good if not better

It's interesting to see that most people will compain but then not DO ANYTHING about it.

I've been trying to push the sounds that I like from the word go. Whether everyone feels it or not - I don't care, but as long as there's a few of us digging what I'm up to - I'm happy.

I didn't see many decent magazines on the scene - so I started one.
A while back I was struggling to find deep label - so I started one.
Recently I've been feeling the free music, but feeling like it's not been done right - so I've started a netlabel.
I always had trouble finding a consistent blog about the stuff I liked - so I started one.
And this week I realised there wasn't a decent listings website/source for Dubstep in Edinburgh - so I've started one.

I know other people are doing the same - pushing the sounds the like, starting projects to support what they believe in.

That's the shit that keeps things going for me - what bothers me is when people complain but don't do anything.

Go and find the inspiration you need to make your mark. Push the sounds you like - whatever they are.
