Let me just get something straight about DAWs
Before I start, note this is not a debate whatsoever. I am merely raising a question I'd love answered and do not wish for this to escalate into a massive DAWars.
But anyway, back to the question; is there a DAW that is actually better than the others? I know it's a matter of opinion, and depends on your preference as well as your own liking of the interface. But is there a DAW that holds an advantageous niche over the others? As in is there something one can do that no other DAW can, or vise versa. I'm just curious if its just down to your personal preference and which you feel more comfortable with as suppose to certain DAWs just appeal more to certain genres; is every DAW able to produce any genre of music, just as long as you have the theory down?
Just wonderin'

In my opinion, yes, there is one daw that does have a major attribute that other daws do not (or not to the same extent, sorry fl people).
Ableton live is a daw like all the others, but on top of that it is a performance instrument. This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to perform music live with it. You can take that live performance aspect and use it purely for music creation purposes.
I say this as a long time and committed flstudio user.

and it's on sale atm for 40 euros atm
Re: Let me just get something straight about DAWs
they all do mostly the same thing just in different ways so it comes down to what works best for you. personally i love digital performer because of the drum editor and similarity to outboard gear workflow that i'm familliar with so it makes sense to me whereas a lot of other DAWs don't. other people swear by logic, or live, or cubase, or renoise (which i also like) or reaper or reason or whatever.
Re: Let me just get something straight about DAWs
Agree with this, but do you agree that live has a whole other half, that of the performance capability? All things being equal, as you say, they all mostly do the same thing, the performance capabilities of live put it on another level?aeser wrote:they all do mostly the same thing just in different ways

i never was productive enough with live to see it's advantages, but that is my limitation, not the programs. but in theory you could perform live with just about any DAW to some extent. or even without one. even dp touts up it's live performance potential http://www.motu.com/products/software/d ... mance.html (even though i don't think of it as very live performance-friendly).

i'm a longtime Reason user and lover

MIDI suite.

Re: Let me just get something straight about DAWs
No, because you CANT record a band with it, and that is the TRUE idea behind a daw, its a music workstation as mentioned above, fully suited for making electronics, but not for recording studio application, which if you look up DAW in the dictionary, youll find, recording is a requirement.lyons238 wrote:how is reason not a daw? you can completely compose a quality track with it...-[2]DAY_- wrote:i thought we were talking DAW'sdeadly habit wrote: in reason

(in response to the OP)
Arguably - ProTools, being as it's the industry standard on the pro level (although Logic and others have been persistently nipping at its heels.) Despite all of the things they've fucked up over the years (like MIDI), despite the fact that it's so convoluted its own documentation sometimes contradicts itself, despite the fact that it's the most un-intuitive thing possible for just sitting down and making a beat... despite all that, it's still some very, very powerful shit in the right hands.
After that it really just comes down to workflow preference with all the rest of 'em.

Propellerhead Record Is Not A DAW!
Sorry, readers.
We have a correction to make. A mea culpa to fess up to. A blogging confession.
Earlier today, we reported on Propellerhead Record, calling it “a new digital audio workstation application” (DAW).
We use the term digital audio workstation, like pretty much the whole world, to refer to “an electronic system designed to record, edit and play back digital audio.”
Propellerheads Software contacted us, though, to ask us to not to refer to Propellerhead Record as a DAW:
Yep, we told you wrong. So we want to be the first to set the record straight.Propellerheads wrote: It is NOT a DAW and we’d appreciate it if you didn’t refer to Record as a DAW.
Propellerhead Record Is Not A DAW
When Propellerhead explains that Record is an application for recording, arranging and mixing audio, that little lightbulb went off in our minds and we thought “Propellerhead Record = DAW”.
Our bad!
We corrected our previous article on Propellerhead Record to help eliminate any confusion over whether Record is a DAW:
We’re not sure why Propellerhead is sensitive about the “DAW” term, but we figure that the company’s trying to carve out its own space in the marketplace, and not trying to compete feature to feature against DAW’s like Apple’s Logic Pro.Propellerhead Software has officially unveiled Record, not a digital audio workstation application, but ” a whole new take on music recording” that “combines effortless recording and a stunning software mixer console with a limitless rack of audio processing gear that builds itself or can be infinitely customized.”
Propellerhead Record will retail for $299. Add in the cost of Propellerhead Reason, and you’re looking at some fairly serious dough to put together a complete Propellerhead-based recording solution – that’s not a DAW – compared to a full-fledged DAW like Apple Logic ($500).
Time will tell if Propellerhead Record can carve out a new place in the market – a place for audio recording and mixing applications that don’t try to compete against full-fledged digital audio workstations.

Re: Let me just get something straight about DAWs
Reason and Record are two different products. Don't say Reason is not a DAW and then link to an article about Record
Re: Let me just get something straight about DAWs
lol the Record bit and whatever is irrelevant. REASON is a MIDI suite. and a damn good one I might add
I've beat that point to death though many times, for no reason... LOL pun intended sucka

Re: Let me just get something straight about DAWs
The point is that Propellerheads don't want you to call any of their products DAWs.
Besides, if the consensus is that "a digital audio workstation (DAW) is a music sequencer designed solely or primarily for recording, editing and playing back digital audio" then it still doesn't qualify; and even if you do include [the separate] Record software, they've gone out of their way to distance themselves from the label of "DAW" for some weird reason (no pun intended.)
I'm not trying to argue that they're not: this is just the message that they're sending us. Reason by itself is not a DAW. Record by itself is not a DAW. Put together, you can call it anything you like... but don't tell them that.

The interface is very subjective and imo it's all that matters but regarding native plug-ins Logic probably has the best quality set.
Just for the record I use Renoise.

This is what I found. It has some quality synths, a really decent sampler and really great effects.daft tnuc wrote:The interface is very subjective and imo it's all that matters but regarding native plug-ins Logic probably has the best quality set.
Just as a plug against Ableton, I gave it a shot. I used the demo for a month and figured that maybe I was just too stupid to figure it out quickly enough, so I went ahead and got Ableton Live. I figured there'd at least be a synth or two I could use, but that wasn't the case, Suite is the only thing with included synths (and for that price, you can get Logic). C'est la vie, I figured I'd use some freeware and order Komplete. After another 2 months of using Ableton I just couldn't enjoy it for what it was. Some people think that way, some people don't. I think linearly so I moved to Logic and never looked back.
