Maybe so but Harry's not real perceptive if he doesn't understand that Bill uses the term yacht to mean something that sails...a very different experience to jetboating with it's noise, speed and exhaust.wub wrote:sd5 wrote: An analogy:
Bill builds yachts. He loves building different kinds & sailing them. Harry comes along & digs what he's doing but reckons he can improve on it. He builds a jet boat and goes over to Bill's to show him what he insists on calling a yacht. Bill says yeah whatever you like but that's not a yacht.
Bill is clearly a fuck knuckle purist if he's unwilling to admit that yachts don't necessarily have to have sails.
haha, this is becoming pretty funny...posting on the boatingforum.
btw, the term yacht was around before motors so it originally applied to sailing vessels.

Curious as to what your opinion of "core dubstep" is sd5... To me core dubstep tunes are stuff like dj abstracts "touch", digital mystikz "awd", tunes like "sholay" and loefahs "beat them"
In other words, non halftime, swingy beats with bass around 140 bpm
To me, halftime dubstep is a variant from the core, what do you think? It's all subjective, I know, just wanted to see what you think...

amazingly fractal, I'm momentarily lost for words
years back I could define dubstep ad infinitum
referring to high hat on third, bpm, sub-bass & space
I could exemplify it & categorize it till the cows come home
now I just hear it & recognize it
however aesthetically pleasing,
I don't hear it in Burial or Borgore,
Mt. Kimbie or Mt. Eden
nor in the recent music of a lot of the original producers and wanna-bes
but I heard it the other night
when Farj played early DMZ vinyl, with its melodic samples
Zero Dub returned from noodling with KM weight,
& Cyrus stripping dubstep to its essence
so the spaces widen to highlight the sub tsunami
and the ebbing swing becomes irresistable steps
and i realized that it's not just the sound
but it's a shared appreciation of all that,
requiring synced minds & aesthetic values,
that makes for core/proppa dubstep
that if i was at a night with you & lots of others on here
and certain tracks came on a big system,
we'd turn to each other
grinning
if there are only tens of thousands on the planet
who can share that
well, i dunno what i did to be so lucky.

i know what i like, and i know what it is. a lot of people just like midrange wobbles, glowsticks, and flat chested 19 year old girls who can't dance a lick... so what? i can just make fun of them and be a condescending prick to their face when they try to talk to me about dubstep.
actually i kinda like glitch mob... don't wanna be a hypocrite up in here... they're not the best group out there by any means but i find their tunes pretty decent. bassnectar and skrillex are pretty terrible, however... this is a fact and you can't argue otherwise, so don't even try.

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

Oh come on Badman was released in 2010 and it's clear that they've taken another direction since then, which is far away from (conventional) dubstep. don't go bad faith...monkers wrote:

there's a lot i'd like to respond to in here that I'll have to come back to later.
for now i just want to say that the shittiest part of this thread is the complaints about how shit it is.
and i really like sd5's boat analogy.
i like to think of it in terms of food. take curry for example: its a broad term that encompasses a lot of "sub-genre" dishes and covers a huge amount of variation. Theres still a limit tho: if you're cooking buffalo in nacho cheese and serving it over pasta you just can't call it a curry at that point. Similarly, if you marinate chicken in barbeque sauce then cook it in a tandoor its not suddenly tandoori chicken.

I don't get it... You start a thread asking people their opinions, they give it to you, you disagree with their opinions, they disagreed with yours... you don't have the same tastes, end of thread, no?pompende wrote:there's a lot i'd like to respond to in here that I'll have to come back to later.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I got the impression you are trying to convince someone here?

and tbf i think all the contrarian opinons have been "you're an idiot" or "if you don't like it don't listen"
Re: attn: bassnectar, skrillex, and glitch mob fans.
and for the fifth time: its not about what i do or don't like. its a matter of terminology.
dubstep emerged as a group of music with no specific genreic identifiers. its constituents were defined more by intention and cultural proximity than a specific rhythmic structure or identifiable tag.
compare this to descriptors like donk house or jackin house which are quite strict and refer to specific sounds. (ie the donk or jazz w/ rap acapellas)

Some of you guys are so busy trying to repel newbies you don't even realise you may be repelling some really cool people that ARE open minded and may be able to teach YOU something. Try giving people a chance instead of shitting all over them before they can even try ffs.
