Its the drinking, drugs and associated probems that most people don't like.

But what else is there to do if your unemployed and living in an disused building?

There's probably more squats with out such problems than there are with. St Agnes place had rastas but other than it was very much family orientated. The myth that squatters are junkes is down to the media I think. It's true that homeless people with substance misuse problems live rough in empty buildings but many people with substance misuse problems also hold down jobs and a their own homes. And again, most squats are shitty places but they're pretty clean and well appointed with baths and things, sure there's nutters living there but again no more different to the nutters who live in many pretty streets behind painted doors.

Just like Irish travelers (who are one of the oldest indigenous tribes in Europe) and Romanies they're persucated because they choose to live differently. Someone once said because they're a threat to the state should the numbers spread. I don't believe that but I do believe that's where the origins come from. If you look at English poverty law during tudor times you'll find an act that passed which stopped people from traveling. I think somehow it extends from that.

But mostly I think it's down to people associating squatters with unwashed junky scum who live in squallor who can't or don't want to get a job and be "normal".

I lived a spit away from here:

Completely different to the trustafarians I mentioned earlier. Those stnuc should be shot at birth in front of their mother in the throws of labour.

Thats what rubs me, upper middleclass ruperts not yet ready to dig into their inheritance funds yet, so decide to rebel against mummy and pops smothering love by pretending they are commy minded freedom fighters who will only wear hemp and eat organic, that is until they get in their mid 30's, then become the very same stnuc they were pretending to hate, putting that 1st class education they got to good use.

It like they see it as some sort of joke.

I mean who would want to live in a squat out of choice apart from those "fuck the system" pseudo-hippies. I'm sure 99% of people who squat would rather work and get their own place to live.

I think travelers (gypseys, pikeys, whatever people in your area call them) are persecuted so much becuase a large portion of them are thieves, and generally violent, horrible (and quite often VERY racist) people. (not all of em obviosuly, i do have traveller friends before anyone decides to jump on on their high horse)
It does tend to be the younger ones that are trouble, which you could say about all young people, however, i dont tend to cross the road if i see a group of chavs walking along the road, gypseys are a different story...

What a bizarre statement to make.

Most would rather get a job and live in a pristine nuclear family?
Well...why don't they then? How about...because they don't want to? :o

There are some serious misconceptions about squatting, I do recommend people watch that Lefties doc further up the page.
