WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *

Post by badger » Mon Mar 21, 2011 10:20 am

seeing as most people wanted this back in some form here you go. it may or may not be a permanent feature depending on how well it works

please post any unfinished tunes, WIPs, or ideas for full tunes that you want feedback for

any finished tunes posted here will be deleted

*Legend4ry EDIT*

Please give feedback to AT LEAST 3 people before you post your track.. If you don't you'll probably not get feedback yourself. Its just common decency anyways!

Oh thank god, the other forum is useless.

@FluidMoShun
That was interesting. The sound right at the beginning was really cool, but I'm not really sure what you were going for with the rest of the song. You're synth sounds have a lot of character though, I really liked some of the sounds.

@Danimal
Siiiiick. Nice and energetic, and keeps that energy without getting boring. Definitely a dancefloor tune. I normally don't like that really dry snare sound you had in there at points, but you worked it in nicely. Good job.

The song in my sig is still a WIP, but just barely. Any changes I'm making at this point will be small mix adjustments and stuff, but feel free to add some constructive criticism.

@FluidMoShun
Such a jazzy feel to this. Keep up the melodic and rhythmic work. I love the jazz.

@Mannnyyyy
I dig the bass.

@hudson
straight dramatic dub. like somethin out of requiem for a dream. similar to what you said, i'm not really into this kind of dub but I like this.

Ez mates

@ Ludson
Love the atmosphere, beautifull.
Well produced and well structured track, could listen to it for days!

@Danimal
That synth at the beginning is a bit too annoying to be played throughout the whole song imo.
Love the Bar9 synth tho, big sound!
Try removing that synth if you know what i'm talking about because it's ruining it for me tbh.

@ Mannyyyyyy
Like the sound, a bit too robotnic for me tho.

@ FluidMoShun
This seemed like something really easy to make, don't know if it's just me.
Curious what DAW you've used tho.

Been really into piano and violin sounds lately and I stepped away from trying to sound robotnic and repetitive and went my own way.
Curious of what you guys think of this one, Feedback MUCH appreciated!

Also check out the tune in my sig (free 320 aswell)

Heh, thanks guys, I didn't expect such positive feedback :P Feel free to download it if you want to, it's a pretty big .WAV though.

@Cubicle
I checked the tune in your sig, amazing sample, I saw that video the other day and considered using it myself, but I didn't think I'd be able to do it justice. That track is amazing though, I'm definitely gonna grab the 320. The bass is so full and the rhythm is perfect. I love the glockenspiel and the keys too. I just love it. Seriously. It's awesome. It really reminds me of Sigur Ros at points and they're one of my favorite bands.

@fluidmoshun - cool groove. easy to move to. kick sounds a bit flabby. needs a bit of beef in there. and the main synths really bassy. but i think the tunes there, just needs some little incidental stuff. really like the backwards thing at the end, should make more of it.

@danimal - i like the the beginning synth, but the 3rd bar in each loop is really annoying. find a better inversion of the chord or eq it better. ha, im typing as i listen... fucking loud drums! nice sounding snare. i like the section at 1.50 ish when the really loud synth leaves. think you could make more of the song without that wobbly stuff. but thats personal taste i guess.

@hudson - nice and chilled. the piano got a bit repetitive towards the end, but its that sort of tune i guess. everything else sounds pretty good. subs quite unrelenting as well. really like the incidental stuff, those organ stabs and risers.

@cubicle - i like everything apart from the piano ha. i can heard a real deep tune without the piano, or maybe its just the pianos quite dry. theres some dissonance in there, but i guess u were going for that. i just got to the end section without piano, i really like it.

heres mine, dont watch the mix. just not sure where to take it next

Glad the thread is back, so confused about the change lol !

@Manny, that sound is nuts, if you could get that working in a song it would song great !

@Danimal, Im liking the Midrange madness going on, lots of different sounds that seem to sit nicely together, id work on the drums a little bit more, vary the pattern a bit more maybe ! good work though

@Cubicle, almost sounds really bland and boring, but then at the same time it works really well as it sounds real earie and mystical, i can see what you are trying to do though, sounding good overall though, nice one !

Anyway here is my Work In Progress, its my first song using logic since i got a Macbook pro !! thanks alot :)

@samkablaam: the intro is a bit too long/boring for me, maybe some additional elements? the panned vocals and the lead vocals are really nice and fit together well. the separate elements of your track are all nice but theres something missing in there but i cant quite put my finger on it... maybe some more percussion elements, im thinking congas/bongoes/djembe? or a different bassline perhabs, some more variation in there might be nice, all in all a nice track.
@hudson amazing piano loop in the beginning, although i have to say that i'm not really fond of that offbeat piano that comes in in the second part of the song. dont know what kind of song you're going for but personally i wouldn't mind if there was some more action in the second part of your song. i absolutely LOVE the reverse reverb and incidental delay on your snares, very smooth. the change at 2:00 is very abrupt, came kinda surprising but not in a good way, i would like some transitional elements there.

@cubicle: i think the violin in the beginning could use some spicing up, for me it just sounds too smooth, you know, the way it fades in so gently, but thats probably exactly what you were going for. the piano is really nice though, especially how it evolves over time, really liking that. the melody just fucks with my brain, sound sorta expressionistic, like something out of an old black and white arthouse movie. dont know if its too crazy for me i haven't decided yet but its definetly very interesting and you should explore this direction more.

here's my WIP
Soundcloud
donkt now if it even qualifies as dubstep because i created it for this thread, so take the theme into consideration. i added a distorted synth at 4:40 and onward, you think i should extend it? does it fit?

danimal- insane. i wanna hear that completely finished man.

manny. i think it pretty unique. could definatly be used

fluid- i wasnt really sure what to think of it. i really like the pitch rises and falls in the back ground though. but stick with that and evolve it.

cubical- i really like where it could go. the horn sounds dont really go with it during the intro. but ive been working in the same area lately trying to grow something more then just a 2 minute bass patch on massive

@hudson: i enjoyed the tune, loved the feel throughout but i have to say that the snare isn't my thing

@samkablaam: love the flow of the tune and i dig those synth stabs! nice one

@s3f: not feeling that distorted synth thats later on, but enjoyed the synth at like 3:18 (vibrato) and the note progression. i like the percussion pattern but the samples don't sit well. also i heard that flstudio sample in there :p

something on a garagey tip i started a while back

ascent- ahh very nice, nice and crisp sound. this is fresh! i really cant think of anything bad to say. i like the super delayed soft hihat in there.

s3f-the intro is too long, or its not interesting enough for me. i find myself wanting to skip forward! (im not gonna though):D i like how use a synth as a helicopter though, kudos for that! the song itself is just to slow for me, what sort of setting would this apply too? i guess im sort of just going off of my own taste. when the drums do finally come in, i think you bring them forward a little. the hihats are so much louder than the drums. its like they are in 2 different spaces. its a pretty epic sound tho i guess. i think you could shorten this. i think thats all the feedback i can currently think of. haha

craggle-there is a little too much fuzz on the high end! i think the transitions should be a little more creative. the second drop could use more UMPH! i know it sounds liek im doggin on this, but this is actually over all a super nice track! keep working at it!

here is mine so far. im still filling it out but im itching to see what other people think so far!!

Thanks for the feedback :)

@danimal: The intro harmonies are hypnotizing. The sound of straight midrange wobbles has started making me sick to my stomach, so this was a very refreshing tune to listen to. The bass is really complex and I love all the layering going on with it :) The only criticism I can think of is for those descending sliding notes that start at :44. Instead of having them all slide down, have some slide up, to make things less predictable. Sounds really pro, tho. Are you signed? If not, you should be!

@Hudson: I was going for a Sound Tribe kind of jam track, but in my own style (and at a dubstep tempo w/ subbass). Anyways, I dig this chilled tune. Its repetitive, but not boring because of all the nuances you threw in. Plus the melody is great, but it could use another part.

@Cubicle: The detuned horn gives the track class. The piano sounds kind of childish, tho. Especially the parts where you play the same note a bunch of times in a row. Everything else sounds good, but I think the piano part needs to go back to the drawing board. And I use FL9.

@Sam: The vocals are very well used. I like the percussion a lot, too, but the kick needs to sound fuller.

@Craggle: When I first read ur post and listened to this song my jaw dropped. Cause I thought you were saying this was the first song you ever wrote :corntard: Anyways, I agree about there being too much high end on the synth, cut some out and that might even leave you with some room to add another subtle part to the song.

thank you mate, and to all those who threw me some good feedback! not signed, trying to get there soon though! Thanks for the suggestion to make the slides go both up and down! I'm still new to NI Massive, but I should get it down. I'm glad the WIPs have a spot in the production forum. Only makes sense.
