Books/Papers

Post by societyloser1 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 6:24 pm

Hay adolescents & adults

I just read 'The mixing engineer handbook' by Bobby Owsinski and I really enjoyed it!
It had some great tips & yeah, It just was an incredible good read!

Now I was wondering do you guys have any good books or papers I should read... I'm really interessed in some general production tips (some more depth in NY compression, cool things you could do with phasing, ...) or some more advice for a mixdown?

Peace

Mixing Audio Concepts, Practices and Tools by that dude with a weird name.. roey hizhaki or sumthin...

its also a beginner level book but looks at the tools more and the concepts a little less.. its a lot more focused on ''what to do''

id suggest it as a second reading.. as it is fairly less conceptual and more technical then the handbook (which opened a whole new world to me)..

and then theres the most esoteric ones like ''mixing with ur mind''

Thanks fot the info, I will check them out!
Yeah, the handbook was so nice, my view on mixing increased like hell! (especially the chapter about dimension was really usefull!)

actually it's written really well so anyone can understand assuming you have some basic foundation on techniques and terminology

Ok, I'll check it out!

I read about an eq tutorial here on the forum (http://www.dnbscene.com/article/88-thin ... q-tutorial), just wanted to share it again (it's a really good view on eq'ing!)
Somebody know something about that infamous compression tutorial the same man wrote?

& the book kode9 wrote, any good?

first book ive ever read on the subject was that one by b.katz

a little daunting at first... especially if u dont have any basics in engineering, and speak french like i do...

but it ended up being a horizon-widening experience...

made me understand i wanted to mix, not to master... also helped me grasp the whole generic musical and artistic concept behind the very technical things we rant about all day... katz is truly a passionate artist...

i recently re-read some chapters, and they seem to make so much more sense now... i think it really has the potential to help any reader...

tho honestly DH, im not sure id recommend it as a first book... why not something very basic about mixing... but a little more in depth then the handbook?? im sure u have ur rationale... but it could scare a noob off... (or maybe thats ur rationale :6: )

for instance (and im not plugging.. im not related to the book) the book i suggested is somehow beginner-ish, but spends more time talking about then tools and what it is that they actually do/dont, then about the process... maybe its not the best approach to read 10 books on one subject and stall... and i reckon quantum leaps can be good sometimes, but it truly helped me to have at least two views on one subject...

so yeah, i think more then one beginner-level book can be good... as it kinda consolidates the conceptual understandings and such... u kinda get the general idea more and more... always from a different angle..

i have to stress one thing tho : some books ull want to read with a pen, highlighter, open daw session and notebook.. some others ull apprehend more casually... so id read at least one beginner level book seriously, and then start reading the other, and some more while im at it, just for enjoyment, with a more relaxed approach...

one thing for sure, reading WILL help u improve to a certain extend... so either way ull be learning...

another thing for sure, my mixes sound like rippled donkey shit when compared to DHs so i may be wrong

Perhaps read some of the books listed at http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=54804?
