Motivation in production

Post by Crosby » Sun Mar 27, 2011 2:43 pm

So what do you produce for and what gives you motivation?
Do you like showing people your music? Discussing with people how you did stuff? Playing music out to crowds?
It took me a while to realise but i think i produce for myself mostly, yeah i like doing the stuff above too but it seems i'm mostly happy when i make something then stick it on repeat for a while and enjoy what I've made.
Still have huge problems finishing tracks though, i never feel like I've done my best when i go to export, so i never really do. Any tips on how you get to finish tracks?

Expression is motivation in and of itsself. Shouldnt be about any of that, aside from maybe the bit you mentioned about listening to it yourself.

Without expressing yourself its hard to find motivation, and without motivation you cant express yourself.
So I'm asking people where they get there motivation to express themselves and what drives them to keep producing, i've read a lot about people having problems finishing tracks too, its not just i don't have the motivation its that i feel im too much of a perfectionist to finish practically anything i start to a level I'm happy with.

Having a signed tune won't get me laid?

It could if you loosen up the definition of 'consenting'.

Smoking fat spliffs, which when making tunes usually results in me stuggling to focus my eyes on the screen, is where i get my motivation from.

Pretty much everything give me some form of motivation or drive at the moment and getting inspiration from the strangest things. Like the way someone dances for example or even the "movement" of buildings as I pass them in a car or bus.

As for finishing tracks. Like some mentioned in another thread on here recently, don't write loops. Aim to build a track rather then a loop, which in time you will
inevitably get bored of and find yourself unable to finish. Building a track will help you focus more on making it develop and evolve and in turn help you draw it to a natural conclusion.

I make music because I enjoy making it, no other reason. The motivation comes from throughout the day looking forward to opening up FL or Ableton when I get home and just writing whatever I feel like, my way of chilling out. If I think somebody else might enjoy one of my tracks I upload it to soundcloud, if not I just drop it into a folder and carry on.
Trying to get on MTV is like trying to be employee of the month at McDonald's.
