One of black metals biggest band is Burzum, which is a one man band. He never played a gig, yet he was one of the biggest. Same with Burial.

Shame the two albums he has released since he left prison have been terrible.

Filosofem is an amazing album though. One of my all time favs actually.

The distro will take their cut (30-60%, depending on who it is) then the label takes their share, with the artist getting the final cut. It also depends if Hyperdub has a publishing deal for Untrue too. In which case, the distro/publisher takes an even bigger cut. Obviously it's speculation, but I remember artists used to get about 15-20% of whatever is left over to the label. So if Hyperdub make £6 from every copy of Untrue they sell (and that is a push), then Burial would get about a quid. Possibly more, since Hyperdub obviously takes care of Burial enough for him to stay with the label.

So by that logic, if he sold 20,000 copies of Untrue (and this is a figure I just made up), then it's possible he made a quid for every album it sells. More with digital, since the digital distros take far less of a cut than their physical counterpart.

You can make money from compilations and the likes, as well as licensing for film/tv. Lots of small money earners that gradually make a pretty decent wage at the end.

But yeah, i'd still be surprised if he doesn't have a day job. London living = expensive as fuck. It's also been 4 years since Untrue and obviously he doesn't play live. It's a travesty that artists as big as Burial might still have to work a day job really, but that's the state of the industry, unfortunately.

I imagine in the near future he'll probably start doing live shows. He's gotten so big now that he will be able to get huge sums of money for playing live, probably at the big festivals. He could just do like Aphex Twin does and charge £20,000 per DJ set, playing a couple of times a year, or when he needs the money.

Or maybe he just doesn't give a fuck about money and lives a simple life. All speculation anyway, but quite fun to think about.
All speculation and a lot of it is wrong.
Sounds like you did music industry 101 at college, the rules are different for independent labels.

Filosofem is good because it is basically an ambient album on low-fi production. And then he pulled the then he added the cheapest guitar sound he could find and just squashed that on top. And it worked. It sounds like something literally recorded in some Norwegian forrest. It is indeed a good album. Other than that, I think Vickerness is an evil person. I can seperate between music and creator, but it's really hard in this instance.

Yeah I find it really hard to sympathize with murderers. I watched a documentary about Black Metal and he seems like an utter nutcase.

there isn't a massive amount of money in record sales for MOST people. Burial shifts A LOT. You are off your head if you think he hasn't made some pretty damn nice ££ from his music career.

Kode9 redbull academy interview from a couple of years ago said Burials first album sold over 40,000 copies and Untrue was "A lot more"

Corse the guy doesnt have to work...

This is all such bizarre speculation given that nobody has any idea whether he has to work or not

Absolutely. Reading his interviews is cringeworthy stuff and his extremist views are just too much.

But then I listen to the raw energy of something like "Jesus' Tod" and the absolutely beauty of "rundgang um die transzendentale säule der singularität" and simply cannot deny his musical skill. Another reason why ego has no place in music, really.

Hence why I said it's all speculation. Feel free to prove yourself right, however. I don't give a shit anyway. His music is the only thing I genuinely care for.
