So does music thats popular have to be generic then? A skillfull producer can work the elements that make that music appealing into their music without it sounding generic (Noisia or 16 Bit for instance) im just saying producers should ignore all this bullshit on here about not using ANY midrange in their sounds (how many of my tunes have used midrange ffs) and not be afraid to write some popular tunes EVEN if they are generic - there's generic music in all corners of this scene not just the popular stuff and compromise is also required in all corners, your only going to get a tune released on a big label if you tailer it to what that label likes.epochalypso wrote:So is popular a synonym for shit now?
Zomby used to make generic wobblers, but (correct me if I'm wrong) he didn't get big until he started doing stuff that was really different and no one had heard before. Zomby EP? That shit is insane.
Compromising your music for the sake of popularity is dooming it from the start isn't it? At the end of the day it'l be forgotten just like 1000 other generic bangers. Once it goes out of fashion, what are you left with?
I'm not going to "do popular stuff" for the sake of exposure if I'm not genuinely feeling it. People can spot that shit a mile off.
Call me optimistic, but having some artistic integrity is what will pay off in the long run.
Not slating you here, Mr Sparx. Much respect for what you've done, but that seems like pretty dodgy advice to be giving.

My theory is that mid range dubstep is for idiots, pure and simple. These people have an overall sense of bullshit. Like they haven't got a fucking clue. If anyone even mentions to me that they like some two bit mid range artist I will instantly feel superior.
