I'm curious as to what people think about these riff machines, or appregiators, whatever the hell they're called, where it randomizes a rhythmic pattern or a chord progression. Do proffesional artists use them? Or is it like cheating?

haha, I was just wondering. I was fucking around on FL studio, tried it out, produced this BEASTLY chord progression, so I made it into a tune. Sort of feel guilty about it.

no, dub is a giant beast that came out of the sea. it had seven heads and 10 horns. these heads are named Logic, Ableton, Reason, Fruity Loops, Reaper, Cubase, and Garageband. Garageband had a scar from a fatal wound it received from sucking so badly.

think it's a good way to get something down quick when your lacking in inspiration, also, you can always take bit's out and move them around if you hear one part you like.

this is one of the best features in fruity i think, especially as it lays it out in midi notes and isnt just a random midi effect like on ableton.

*SIGH. I was asking about RIFF MACHINES, not the religious history of Dubstep. But still, the replies are pretty goddamn awesome nonetheless.

Whatever works, use it! Used one in the track in my sig, basically just kept right clicking, and selecting "randomize pattern" until I found something close to what I was looking for, then modified it slightly to fit the track better.

there's nothing wrong with arpegiators. There is something very wrong with calling them "riff machines"

bro tip: try one on your bassline, with a low arp rate.
pro tip: don't arp every chord progression you ever write from here on out. No amount of verb and delay will take the cheesy trance wank-ness out of it.

if you send an arp to a seperate midi track in ableton it will record the pattern so you can change it like in FL

riff machine is gay...it doesnt even come out with anything that ever sounds good with the rest of the tune. if you use it, you are lucky if it comes out with something good. it also takes away from the creativity
