I know that sounds pretty nooby.
I understand the basics of it, but my question is how do DJ's make a mix their own? I know alot about production, but I'm really curious about the domain of the DJ. I don't wanna be a shitty DJ who just plays other peoples music, I'm interested in making my own sound with it. And I've seen DJ's who are amazing, whom are more artist than DJ.
Anyways I'm rambling I think, so to summarize my question is what are the methods used to make off the hook mixes like these? Also what would be a good piece of hardware to look at for the purpose of digital DJing?
Thanks guys, this forum is amazing. Yo guy's muzik is da shiznit.

Type ean golden into youtube and start watching. Hes very creative. But many times he will beat juggle in his.mixes and add fx give it his own twist. Basically u can trigger samples to make up your own riff etc...

Itegrate elements of production into your mixing, Im slowly but surely practicing live looping/sampling/reaaranging/blah blah...
Get a massive collection of your own tools produced and get them going in the mix at times, shit like ambient soundscapes, drumlines, chaopped up accapellas and stuff... Looks quite sick when you play pinch + extra bongos + well selected vocals... Ect...
Play your own tunes, thats biggest one.. if your learning how to dj you stand an advantage because you dont even 100% have to finsih tunes, just get solid riffs and shit that will fit into the mixes at times...

proper selection, reading the crowd... creative use of their gear. Sorting out one's entire philosophy/view of Djing in general.. essentially you're now a composer armed with the sample library you've brought in your record bag (or harddrive). You could do literally anything with the tracks u play
some people let tracks play and breathe in their own right more, some people fire thru them to keep it moving
u could do a subtle blend while mixing in a new tune that is barely noticed by the audience or u could do tremendous mashups of 2 tracks
u could view ur tables as essentially a sampler, and use whatever sounds u have rhythmically (basically scratch)
IMO the main thing is selection and context (which tunes come before and after which tunes, using the order of tunes u play to convey ur artistic vision for what the night ought to sound like)
and contrast (not playing the same style all night, drop to drop with nothing to offset it... drops begin to lose their impact entirely)
then comes mixing ability, which is also important.

for me: that is the important thing, get a feeling of when to play what kind of tracks...
how to entertain the crowd, to wake them up? or let them have their deep trip?
the selection and mixing on midnite in a dark club is maybe not the same as on sunrise at the beach...

This arises the question for me, how would a producer present music live? If I've already laid everything out to how I want it to sound, how do I perform it live without just pressing play and standing there? xD

DJ it?
nah really you could get a controller that would let you do live drum edits, maybe have the synths laid out as patches but play improv melodies back, get quick with your mouse n the playlist and do live re-arranging, ect.
Look up tim exile/Flying Lotus/Samiyam/daedelus/nosaj ting/tokimonsta/ect, look up their live performances on youtube, youll get the idea, start with exile.

oh and usually the people you talk about who are the djs who mix their own stuff exclusively, are very often producers-turned djs... making tunes is one thing, playing tunes is another.
my favourite dj gigs were by djs who played other artists stuff..
i like how everybody here avoided the trollific subject

If you don't jock discs you're not djing imo. Definitely respect for live loop artists though.

beatmatching, songs in key well it doesn't have to be most of the time but it has to blend though, good song choices, effects(?), connections (gettin exclusive dubplates) and others I may have forgotten.
