ableton compresser

does anyone know and some good tips for using the ableton compresser, mostly for basslines and drums. im a bit confused as to what the right settings are for my basslines

Ableton has presets for kick and snare compression I find work quite well. For bass line compression I get much better results with URS Prostrip then Abletons compressor.

I didn't understand compressors for ages till I looked up exactly how they worked then it was like duh, winning.

That link is very useful to me as well, even though I don't particularly worry about compressing. Thank you!
Fairly new to the producing realm. Only been going about a year and a half.

Way back when, a studio engineer told me how to understand compression. He said set a heavy ratio that you would never use first and take the Threshold all the way down.

Then adjust the attack and release to hear what those controls do. It helped me hugely compression wise.

At first it's not exactly blatant about why you would use these controls or what they do in relation to how you want a sound. But it becomes easier with time.

you just need to learn how compression works, on the upside ableton's compressor is a good one to learn with. try assassin's suggestion too, it's a good one. take it to an extreme setting then slowly work your way back from there and you can start to hear the full range of what a compressor can do.

compression started to make sense for me when i thought of how it shapes sound.
