just did tape mod on my mpk

Post by lyons238 » Sun Apr 17, 2011 9:59 pm

yeah so i just finished the tape mod on my mpk25. i used 4 layers of normal electrical tape. i didn't like opening up the mpk too much. pulling the ribbons out sketches me out, im not sure how many times they will be able to pulled in and out...and the screws that you unscrew only screw into plastic, so i don't think the mpk should be pulled apart too much.

the 4 layers of tape helped a lot. all the pads are pretty consistent, for the most part and i can now tap out fast triplets without having to slam the pads. i still use them mostly on full level, because you do still need to slam them to get full velocity, but i think thats how all mpc's and stuff are. not a big deal there, they still register light taps now. im not sure if i should have used more tape layers, i read online one guy used 5-8 layers. i think 5 may be the perfect amount but i didnt want to go too much because i read if you use too many layers the pads can act screwy and double trigger etc...

i do plan on buying the fat pads from mpcstuff.com. i just don't have the extra 50 bucks to drop on a sheet of rubber right now. in a few weeks though. so unfortunately i will be opening up the mpk 1 more time and hopefully that will be the last time. im hoping the fat pads will be the perfect feel, responsiveness, and consistency.

so overall the mod definitely helped, but im still not 100% happy. last stop fat pads, hopefully those do it for me.

Tried this mod on my mpd24 a while ago but one layer was already to thick. Guess it's already responsive enough.

yeah iv read the mpd's are a bit more responsive than the mpks. same with the mpc's related to the mpd's. from what iv read in terms of responsiveness it goes...

mpc > mpd > mpk

until modding of coarse.

also i have been told that some units differ in sensitivity, so its sort of a gamble. ill def be buying the fat pads though. i really hope those make me 100% happy with the mpk. i dont see why akai couldn't make good pads on their product. not sure whos doing the testing there but they must be on steroids or something.

I would feel sketchy as hell pulling wires apart that don't feel likethey should be Pulled apart. I say save up for the 50 dollar peice of rubber, do that and be done, don't bother with going back in to add one layer of tape. I'm happy with that pads, yeah he fact I can't "tap" quick notes is kind of annoying. But basic kick snares fills ican do. Do you know how to change the velocity curve for the pads, or threshold or whatever. And have you tried the abelton also edition that came with it? Is it worth installing?

I didn't need to disconnect the ribbon cables on my mpk49. Maybe it is different for the 25? I just folded it back.

um i already have ableton live lite from something else i bought and i dont use it so not really lol.

and to change the sensitivity/threshhold you just go to the Vyzex application that installed with it and then go to global i think? then just click the sensitivity to 16 and the threshold to 1.

and yeah im not going to bother adding another layer of tape. im going to wait till i get the fat pads.

maybe i didnt need to idk the tutorial i was watching told me to so i did. i didnt really even bother seeing if i could do it without disconnecting them. but when i put the fat pads in i will definitely try not to take them things out again.

oh and btw akai puts some red rubberish lock tight on their screws. i think if you could find that special lock tight or whatever it is and reapply it they will not be able to tell if you opened it up or not. if i ever have to send mine in under warrantee i will definitely do that.
