You should be able to recognise a few tunes in ASC's mix .. I'm sure I could entice a tracklist outta James with maybe some Old Trafford tickets :)

Had a few peeps say the voiceover bits by me are a little on the quiet side when listening on a sound system, but on the oldie mp3 player its fine !!

big ups to Pistonsbeneath, great track mate and to Boddika for handing over 5 tunes for the show !! fucking <3 his music

Also great reaction to the 2 'brixton riots' tracks played

Looking forward to hearing what Tom @ Ramp has up his sleeve for the vinyl only Ramp Recordings mix

Taken from FACT

For someone who professes simply to follow his own ears, Tom Kerridge has a habit of being uncannily on the money.

His label RAMP Recordings helped precipitate the past few years’ surge of interest in post-J Dilla hip-hop beats, as well as servicing a growing taste for the startlingly coloured synth fantasias of the likes of Zomby. Moreover, the catalogue is as good an emblem as any of where so much of the promise in UK dance music presently lies – namely the blurry hinterlands between dubstep, UK funky and garage. Zomby aside, Shortstuff, Hot City and Slugabed have all been on the books, as have like-minded counterparts from overseas such as Desto and Falty DL.

If the the label’s relatively diverse cohorts seem somehow to be chipped from the same block, it isn’t by design, according to Kerridge. All the same, that set of ears makes for a distinctive and personal approach to signing and releasing music. The RAMP man kindly agreed to let FACT find out more, supplying insights on topics including his shadowy network of side-projects, the pros of working with Zomby, and why net-labels suck.

“RAMP really started as an albums label…”

First of all, is it fair to say 2009 was a pretty good year for RAMP? Are there any highlights you’ll look back on particularly fondly?

“Indeed, we had a great year in 2009! Hard to pick out real highlights, I get so much from every release I put out. I am still genuinely as excited when I get a new test pressing – or when I hear a new tune I want to sign, or when I first see artwork some terribly talented individual has put together for me – as I was ripping open boxes of Transformers on Christmas Day when I was five. RAMP@Lightbox was a blast, but a bit of a blur thanks to everybody buying me shots every few minutes. Going to Loop festival in Brighton with Zomby was great fun too.”

Tell us a bit about what’s in the pipeline for you this year. We hear you have some albums in the works, which sound exciting – does it feel more ambitious than anything you’ve done so far?

“Not really: RAMP really started as an albums label, and we did put out the Skweee Tooth and Zomby CDs last year too. Still by far the biggest thing I have put out was our second release, BEGBORROWSTEEL by Count Bass D, closely followed by the Kankick album. I only really started doing singles seriously when I branched away from hip-hop. I’ve always been very album-driven, but I think how everything has been, we needed to release some 12-inches before people were really warmed up to what we are doing. I was very conscious of this when I did change up what RAMP was putting out, because at the time everything was so segregated. I am not interested in just knocking stuff out, I want to get everything right, it’s not just a case of throwing another release on the pile.

How do you tend to come across the music you release? Are there particular aims or principles guiding what you decide to put out?

“If I like it, I put it out, there is no science to it. Looking back (and forward) on the music I have signed, I’ve noticed that I do have quite a distinct ear, and have been able to draw a line between the music from an artist like Shortstuff to somebody like Ras G. There is a certain messiness to the music I sign to RAMP.

“How I come across stuff varies. Sometimes I hear somebody dropping it in a set or a mixtape, sometimes people approach me, sometimes it’s when I’m bored and surfing through MySpace or something. Sometimes I hear a random little release that grabs my attention, sometimes somebody will tip me off about a new artist – sometimes just in conversation with an established artist – and a release works itself out. Again, no science, it just seems to happen.”

Have you noticed a pattern of RAMP artists subsequently being picked up by bigger labels? Do you mind that?

“I can’t really say that happens a lot, as I can’t think of too many artists who have really signed to a significantly bigger label after releasing on RAMP, but I certainly don’t mind if somebody is destined for bigger and better things. It must say I’m doing something right! The whole concept behind RAMP was to not push the label brand down people’s throats, I’m much more interested in pushing the artists I work with instead of the branding of the label. Some RAMP releases don’t even have a logo on them.

“I do know there are other labels watching what I do, inside and outside of our scene, and they step in on my artists. I am pretty close with everybody I work with and help a lot of them on the management side of things, so I hear all of the offers that come their way and we discuss what the best plan of action would be. I’m certainly not going to stop somebody doing something that would be beneficial to them, but we have a great set-up here. I can give a release the same service a much bigger label can, without ridiculous overheads. We are also 100% completely and totally independent – I have had not help on any level from any external companies. You would be surprised how common it is nowadays for “independent” labels to have a much bigger company in the background pulling the strings.

“I am actually very happy with the people I am working with right now. I don’t want to release music by an artist who isn’t excited to release on my label, as I wouldn’t release music by an artist who doesn’t excite me, so as soon as that excitement stops on either side, so do the releases.”

Are you consciously giving a platform to music that’s on the fringes, so to speak, rather than bang in the middle of a genre or scene, or just doing what you feel?

“Like I said before, there is really no science to it. I am not consciously trying to do anything “genre breaking” or anything like that, it just so happens that the music that I like is not awfully shit dubstep or formulaic hip-hop. As long as I have been listening to music I have enjoyed stuff that doesn’t sound like anything else, and therefore my taste is constantly changing. In that way, RAMP is a complete and total reflection of my own fickleness and low attention span. If I was a different person who was into very generic and boring music, then RAMP would be a very different label.”

Balkansky
East Operations Part 1
Label: SUBTRAKT

Image

Hard smacking dubstep rave styles from Balkansky with the East Operations EP for Subtrakt. ‘Hipnoza’ takes over the A-side with a roguish hardstepper built from inverted gabber kicks and layered up with screeching synths and building rave lines, while ‘United’ slashes into a sampled rap vocal over squelching gutterbass wriggles with a darkly overcast atmosphere and ‘Hitroza’ steps out with a Headhunter style beat arrangement and grinding bass for added dancefloor pressure. These tracks have been caned on sub.fm, react.fm and are currently big with Freak Camp, Dutty Dubz and the rest of the harder dubstep rave crew.

Balkansky & Loop Stepwalker
Title: Fraktals
Cat#:adn142
Format: 12″

A1. Kora
A2. Fire
B1. Tornado
B2. Tales From The Crypt

Image

The renowned detailled and personal production of Balkansky (a.k.a. COOH) meet the rage and insolence of the young Loop Stepwalker, resulting in a powerful record which puts rawness back into dubstep. “Fraktals”, the first collaborative release between these two artists, is an energy-packed and original record which will fit perfectly alongside Broken Note or Niveau Zero both on the dancefloor and on turntables. Dirty but subtle, hard but balanced: the first step of an exciting path. (get this on 12″ / as mp3)

Advent – a coming, or an arrival; a coming into being or use.

Quite an appropriate name for Cisco Ferreira, a man who has played a big part in the creation and development of Techno from the very beginning of this genre’s history. Indeed, his Techno CV is the stuff of legend. Cisco was producing Techno and performing live Techno shows years before the rest of the world had even heard of the genre. He released his first track in 1988, was a pioneer of the Live PA (or Live Public Address – performing Techno live in front of an audience using electronic music gear), and, if all that wasn’t enough, he even worked as the sound engineer on some of Derrick May’s, Adonis and Fingers Inc’s recording sessions!

The list goes on, and so does Cisco. Unlike ot her Techno pioneers from the early years, Cisco continues to produce with as much passion and frequency as he did back in the day. His releases on Labels Like Tresor, Rotation, Electrix, Kanzleramt, International Dj Gigolo, Pure Plastic, Synewave plus many more is just another example of his ongoing pursuit to keep making music and pushing Techno to new boundaries.

Cisco was born to Portuguese parents on the island of Madeira (Portugal). His family moved to London (1975) when he was five years old, setting the stage for his musical career. While at Paddington College (1986) in West London, he studied sound engineering and secured a job after graduation as an assistant sound engineer at ZOLOU Then later WALL Studios. At this period is when he really started to learn about Sound and Production, his 1st main recording sessions as an engineer were rock and “Inde” based bands and the studio owners being in successful rock bands Matt Dangerfield and John Payne “ASIA” this 1st step was a start in learning about balancing and mixing down the rock way, which had a lot of intense and Raw energy especially on drums and Guitars..

Other bands Cisco did sessions for: P.I.L. (John Lydon – sex pistols) – Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) – That petrol emotion. Then Later Pop, Dance, Soul and reggae groups like: Wild Bunch (Nelly hopper and Massive Attack) – Marco Pirroni (Adam and the ants) – Maxi Priest – Sly Dunbar (Sly and Robbie) – Loose Ends – Cheryl Lynn …. 1987 Cisco began going to clubs and learning about this new thing called Acid House, which was spreading like crazy throughout London’s underground scene, culminating in the famous “Summer of Love” in 1988, the genre’s golden period.

Around this time, a record label called, Jack Trax “One of the 1st to release Acid House, House and techno in UK” Moved in next door and began using the same studio for recording sessions, with Cisco as the engineer working with Fingers Inc, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson and Derrick May. Cisco released his first record in 1988 on Ferrari records (R&S records) Then later “Cisco Ferreira” EP on Fragile. His first big break came in 1994, when he and fellow Londonite Colin McBean (a.k.a. Mr. G) were brought on by Internal Records to help co-produce a group called Salt Tank. A record contract with Internal/FFRR soon followed, committing The Advent to 12 EP’s and 3 albums.

Today, The Advent goes on just as Cisco Ferreira. While he has had a long history with tons of accomplishments to hang his hat on, he continues to make history. The Advent is fulfilling Cisco’s vision as much as ever. He is busy touring as both a DJ and a live performer, producing for numerous labels, and running his own Techno imprint, Kombination Research.

As Cisco moves forward, striving to fulfill the ambitious goals he has set one can look back at his storied past and see how he has come full circle..

On episode 153 I have two producers on EE - Kahn (Bristol dub/dubstep) + George Lanham (techno) owner of technopodcast.com

“I’ve used this mix as a means to shed light on some of the music I make which people have not heard before. My own vocals feature quite heavily in the music and I’ve included a selection of tracks by some of my close friends, who are a great inspiration to me.”
- Kahn

My mix for EE was made on a pioneer DJM800, 2 pioneer CDJ1000s, with music sourced from traktor.
- George Lanham

My name is Joseph McGann and I’m from Bristol. Music has been my life force since I was a child and I’ve been lucky enough to have a diverse musical upbringing. Most of my time is spent making music and performing. I chose the name Kahn because I like the word.

As part of the Sureskank Convention crew, he has been involved in the Bristol bass music scene for some time and has remained eclectic in his musical output since the start.

Having recently released his debut single ‘Like We Used To’ on the acclaimed Punch Drunk record label, this year has seen him make his presence known across the world.

The Sonic Router blog is one of a few bibles I go check on a daily basis
Make sure you also check Kahn’s mix for them, it complements his EE mix perfectly

Re: [Punch Drunk] - Kahn - Mix for ELECTRONIC EXPLORATIONS

wow great show again big up.
Kahn mix indeed is a great compliment to the sonic router mix, very different in style. Loving the vocal work, including an interesting take on one of my favourite all time tunes 'No Partial'....I'm guessing that is kahn himself on the vocals, think it works really well on a lot of the tracks, sounds vaguely similar to thom yorke funnily enough. The variety of his styles of his productions are insane, going from hyped rudeboy grime anthems to delicate down tempo hushed vocal tracks, he's rapidly becoming one of my favourite producers.
Was really feeling some tracks in the rob booth section as well, especially that new Africa Hitech material. Thanks!

VON D
‘DAYDREAMING’
[BOKA RECORDS]

Image

RELEASE DATE: 6TH JUNE 2011

‘Daydreaming’ is the debut album release from Paris based artist Von D on Boka Records. A fusion chef of bassweight, Von D has deftly sliced into unpredictable genres, concocting strange and beautiful new forms.

The album sees Von D collaborating with the internationally renowned Foreign Beggars, Phephe, David Boomah (vocalist for Shy FX Murderation) and Riya & Mr Lager, while his previous work has also been remixed by a host of respected dubstep DJ’s including Skream and Tes La Rok.

Born into the cultural melting pot of the Paris suburbs, Von D found his soul’s conduit in a beaten up old drum kit. Whilst the riddims of King Tubby alongside the foetal jungle of Photek and Serge Gainsborg were initial inspirations, after forging a successful path as a sound engineer Von D honed his sound sculpting skills to a razor sharp edge.

Von D’s productions have been picked up by Skream, arguably one of dubstep’s most successful artists, who snapped up a release for his label Disfigured Dubs. DJ Chef released Von D’s ‘Show Me’ on his Sub Freq imprint, which quickly became one of the most talked about releases of 2009 – so much so that three time DMC World Champion DJ Craze has been supporting the track in recent mixes.

Not one to be complacent, Von D’s kept up the pressure with releases on Black Acre, Tempa, Soul Jazz and Argon – enough to attract the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson who has included a track for his hotly anticipated ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation album.

Von D has created a global buzz with his numerous explosive live performances featuring unreleased and exciting material from himself as well as other established producers. Having had a host of successful tours in the United States, Europe and China, Von D has now set his sights on touring New Zealand and Australia.

Biography

Von D, Born into the multi cultural melting pot of the Paris suburbs, a young Von D found his soul’s conduit in a beat up drum kit. While the riddims of King Tubby fused and morphed into the foetal jungle of Photek, Serge Gainsborg issued instructions from the radio.

A fusion chef of bassweight, Von D deftly slices into unpredictable genres, concocting strange and beautiful new forms. After forging a professional path as a sound engineer, Von D has honed his sound sculpting skills to a razor sharp edge.

Not content with producing some of the scenes freshest music, Dubstep founders like Skream & Tes La Rok have dropped their own flavour on his music by remixing Von D’s tracks “Show Me” & “Truth” respectively.

While BBC’s Gilles Peterson, widely acclaimed as a musical tastemaker around the world has included Von D’s track in this hotly anticipated compilation albums, and three time DMC World Champion and one of the worlds hottest hip-hop DJ’s, DJ Craze has been supporting Von D, including Von D’s “Show Me” in his latest mix.

With no sign of slowing down, Von D’s immense production has seen his music picked up by the dubstep scene’s number one artist Skream, securing a Von D release for his label Disfigured Dubs, DJ Chef also released Von D’s “Show Me” featuring Phephe on his Sub Freq imprint, going on to be one of the most talked about releases of 2009 and with hugely popular releases on Black Acre and Argon, we can now begin to ready ourselves for one of the most hotly tipped Albums of 2011, forthcoming on Boka Records.

Far from the shy studio type, Von D has also created a global buzz with his numerous explosive live performances featuring unreleased and exciting material from Von D as well as other established top producers.

From touring the United States or though out Europe, Von D has also reached as far flung as China with New Zealand and Australia also in his sights. Whether his music is either on wax in your room or played out by the artist in front of you, Von D is an act not to be missed, Von D rocking a dancehall near you soon.

Description

Born Travis Stewart on March 4th 1982, Machinedrum has produced and composed several albums under various aliases since his first independent release in 1999.

His debut album Now You Know, was released in 2001 on the influential Miami-based Merck Records under the name Syndrone and gained worldwide attention and praise from musicians, fans and critics in the scene. It was heralded as the “standard to which the next wave of imitators aspires” by Pitchfork.

Having a strong background in both acoustic and electronic instrumentation, he dances between those elements on all his releases. This can be heard in the field recording and vintage synth laden Urban Biology to his seminal production and mixing of the This Charming Mixtape with MC Theophilus London. His critically acclaimed 2009 album Want To 1 2? was another showcase of his most recent production.

In 2010, Machinedrum released his Many Faces extended EP on Glasgow’s LuckyMe and has recorded under the name Sepalcure, a collaboration with friend Praveen Sharma, releasing the Love Pressure EP and Fleur EP on UK’s Hotflush label.

Four effortlessly diverse dance weapons from man-of-the-moment, Machinedrum. The rippling 808s and psyche-y soul infusions of the title track are comparable with early Diplo outings, while ‘Flycatcha (ft. Body Language)’ offers an adroit and unstable take on Chicago footwork and ‘Fantastix’ runs off a Plug-style Breakbeat jungle workout. Best of the bunch is ‘Listen To Me’, a body hypnotising Afro-rhythmic number with wonderfully tilted synths and strings.

Anodyne:
"One of Ireland’s unsung electronic heroes, Colin N Cloughley aka Anodyne has been making music since the late 90’s, appearing on the seminal MASK offshoot of Skam Records.

It should come as no surprise that fertile period of rave history has inspired and informed his productions heavily, surfacing in the fierce electro/techno/drum-break hybrid rhythms and dense, majestically mournful chords infusing every track which call to mind Autechre, Gescom and Rob Hall."

Threnody:
Threnody has been producing computer music since the early 2000s having evolved his sound from his early output for guitars and a 4-track.

Always on the dark outskirts of dubstep, breakbeat, jungle & electronica his music is characterised by deep atmospheres & soundscapes, warped bass & intricate drumwork.

Threnody’s production work has become increasingly orchestral and glitch driven with thick basses and fragmented vocals whilst as a DJ he has performed across Europe devastating dancefloors with a tuff and energetic sound. Recently he has recorded exclusive mixes for Get Darker and The Centrifuge in addition to this mix for Electronic Explorations.
