Audio cables

Post by daft cunt » Sun Apr 24, 2011 1:31 am

We always talk about monitors and audio interfaces but rarely if ever about audio cables.
I just bought good ones on a friend's recommandation and it feels like I spent 500 € on new equipment.
So in case you're, like me, too dumb to know that just go to the store and ask for their best cables :6:

Van Damme Cables are probably some of the best you could buy. I don't think it matters too much in the studio but for live gigs and events where cables are getting a lot of use, cheap cables break and fail real quick. Not worth buying cheap shit for that purpose! You can get by on cheap budget cables but if you care about sound and your passion, treat yourself :]

This, Mogami really has the best price/performance ratio in my opinion, and a lot of high end studios are very happy with these cables!

Cables are important not just for their sound, but for their reliability. I got some a cable that came with the microphone as part of a package deal at guitar center and after like 3 uses it started cutting out if you held it a certain way. What that means is somewhere along the cable the connection broke. It was a piece of shit. Bought some monster XLR cable and couldn't be happier.

What audio interface & speakers you have ? At the very least you should replace the cable between them.

Those, I already had cabled up, but I'm gonna drop a bombshell, they're not even balanced :o ... dead silent, no interference.

I roll over my monoprice cables all the time, no failures, they are heavy gauged, they are cheaper than homemade, I really can't complain. Actually I can, they have a very thick rubber coating that that is bulky and heavy. We'll see if they're working in 10 years.

But I just pulled a lot of old cables out of storage and the only failures I had were from higher priced pro co's. Nothing a little soldering couldn't fix, but, they were brand named, higher priced and they were the only failures. I'm totally happy with the monoprice right now. :4:

Again, talk to me in 10 years and we'll see.

Might as well post here instead of starting a new thread. Im buying a new interface soon and was wondering what the difference is between trs and xlr. My krks take both and their both balanced so is there any advantage to be had using xlr over trs?

If your manual say's the KRKs have balanced TRS inputs (I'd double check but I think its TS inputs which are the two contact unbalanced version) then it doesn't really matter which connector type you use.
Most audio interfaces tend to use TRS (jack) outputs rather than XLR so you'd probably be better off going for that option.

Isn't it better to use XLR ins anyway ?

Good quality cables are important... however, don't just splash extra for gold-plated connectors, etc just for the sake of it (ie - without researching the company)

Gold connectors seem like a posh idea - but gold itself doesn't improve the sound, at best it reduces the rate of corrosion. But then again, you should be buying new cables more than every 50 years anyway.

What to look for are companies who build reliable cables - not ones coated in flash metals.

Yup, thier cleaner because each line is separated so there is no chance of circuit crosstalk, but realistically, you wont really know the difference as long as your TRS is balanced. Well, not for the first 15 years anyway.

And gold does improve quality, being a precious metal it is refined to a lot higher purity than common metals like copper wire and foil shielding. This (theoretically) reduces the noise the wire makes in comparison.

Of course this is all the science of the wire. In reality the differences may not even be noticeable.

TRS is a balanced signal to begin with, so there is no difference between it and XLR besides the plugs on the end
