Shuffled Precussion
Hey, I'm pretty new at producing and so far the most difficult thing for me has been creating the shuffled hat/percussion sound that adds movement to the track.
For Example:
the shuffled percussion here. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

^ master of groove. Look at where all those hits are in relation to the grid. Like load a wav or an mp3 of that in you daw, and match the bpm, and just look at the way the hits relate to the grid. Blow your fucking mind.

haha, not that you can't, but that is not how those grooves on that album were created.

Re: Shuffled Precussion
i was asking this question 2 years ago and honestly it just comes down to experience and playing with shit. eventually you will get the hang of what you are trying to do, just play around with different hat sounds and find samples that play off eachother well.

Re: Shuffled Precussion
Get a metronome going and play the rhythms in yourself.
Re: Shuffled Precussion
I load up anywhere between 3 and 6 hi hats in my step sequencer and tick every step in each one so all the blanks are filled. then I randomly subtract steps from that to get a thick/complex hat pattern...then you can do that a few more times and alternate between each hat pattern

This 100%. Benga is next level when it comes to shuffley drums.nowaysj wrote:^ master of groove. Look at where all those hits are in relation to the grid. Like load a wav or an mp3 of that in you daw, and match the bpm, and just look at the way the hits relate to the grid. Blow your fucking mind.

Re: Shuffled Precussion
hats can be the hardest thing to get to grips with; personally I have most success playing them out rather than using groove/swing templates or settings....each to their own. It helps being a drummer, but even then, 95% of stuff I play out, I delete.

Re: Shuffled Precussion
Quick and dirty trick: throw some delay and/or flanger on just the hats. Experiment manually with the delay timing or lock it to a particular step amount. Gets a shuffle feel going quick.

Re: Shuffled Precussion
try using other things than just hats.
what about a diff kick sound in between the regular 1 3 type shit? or some rim shots or clicks.
or even keeping the kick and snare unshuffled and the giving just the hats swing.
at least thats what ive fucked with idk.
this post was pointless...yeee!! party on

you can also cut hihat samples that have to hits in them, so when you trigger once, you hear two hihats in succession. Don't alter the tempo of the sample to fit the tempo of the track you are working on. This will result in a "out of time" second hit, which can sound really nice (depending on where you put it).

And this technique is pure gold when used with any bit of audio. Why working with audio can be so rich. Often, nowadays for nowayjs, it's like make a simple beat, with some variations, and then fuuuuuck with it. Use glitch type tools to interject structured chaos, or chaotic structures, all that going to audio, and then just manually cutting and rearranging the original audio, then cutting a rearranging the glitched bits, you get 10x the amount of interesting relationships happening. Little tiny relationships, macro relationships. Just very rich technique.
Also one of the reasons sampling from vinyl is so rich. Some other track, with all kinds of internal relationships, which are broken into varying degrees of internal coherency, then reformed into a new idea, with its own internal logic partly derived by the disjointed fragments of an external structure. Argh, I wish I was in my studio right now. RICH!

benga makes em in fl.. mostly... while any daw could do lets just reflect on what comes more naturally thru fl...
fl allows u to drag many many samples instantly... so he prolly uses a lot of very similar samples (saw him do it in his masterclass, guilty as charged)...
they may not all have the same silence before ... depending on how he cuts them.. could be part of the groove.
then fl allows u to shift forward or backwards very easily too.. on individual hits... but all of that still goes thru the benefits of a focused step sequencer.. honestly... fl is a blessing for that...
that might help...
still...
prolly the foundation of it is .. he actually seems to start with the hats... and get a good groove out of them before adding the kicks and snares..
so focus on ur hats and percs and dont consider them a mere complement, use as many samples as ur inspired to .. and dont be afraid to shift some of them.. the rest is knowing how to dance and loving the music...

Wait a minute, shift forward in the step sequencer? Don't think that is possible. Eager to learn though...Ldizzy wrote:then fl allows u to shift forward or backwards very easily too.. on individual hits... but all of that still goes thru the benefits of a focused step sequencer.. honestly... fl is a blessing for that...
Re: Shuffled Precussion
well i dont remember if its backwards or forward, but i kno u can do one, by clicking the little button that's next to the piano drop down menu on the sequencer,
brings out the Velocity modulation menu thang... and that thing can be scrolled around to find discrete settings for panning, x cut, y cut, pitch, volume, and shift... u prolly knew that tho..
i just dont remember if u can drag them forward or backwards... but u can do one pretty drastically, and then u can do the other by playing ur sound in the next step available but with the proper settings... eg : 1 with full shift is right next to 2 with no shift...
if it doesnt suit ur need u can always program ur beats in 64 steps like i did for a while or... piano roll...
