Rusko for 10K+ LOL
I really don't believe a dubstep artist would be paid that much for an hours(or two) work.
Comparing artists like the prodigy to rusko, magnetic man et all is laughable.
Comparing them to pop crossover artists is also laughable.
I could understand Dave Clarke charging a lot but Rusko?!?!
Even deadmau5 could charge those sort of prices. But he is no Carl Cox or Tiesto.

Prodigy/Pendulum/Chemical Brothers/Tiesto/Names that make shit like Ultra sellout. Skream n benga played ultra this year and were a footnote, same wiht rusko (Im not even sure either were on the main flyer).... thats big in EDM... Dubstep isnt big enough to call any of its heavyweights "the big guys"

I just don't like random people making up figures when they don't know enough about EDM or how much it costs to book a famous artist.
If Rusko's (agent) gets 10k for a gig then fair play. However the reality isn't so plush for a relatively unknown artist.
Maybe its different in the US. Rusko must be laughing. I can't see him getting paid more than £500-£2000 in the UK.. Even at Fabric

Re: How much $ are the "big" guys making
The magnetic man album was number 5 in the charts, they had a couple of singles in the top ten and the 'katy on a mission track' she did with benga was top 5 too.
I know they aren't as big as Tiesto or BT but that's hardly underground.

Re: How much $ are the "big" guys making
From the little promoting i've done, people like Grafix & Fred V charge around £500 for an event, which is 1hour/2hour set, netsky is around 2 grand, and commercially he is one of the biggest producers of 2010, but those costs don't incorporate the promoter paying for travel and accommodation, the contract for netsky stated that you had to accommodate him in a 4* + hotel, Dubstep DJ's are more or less the same, but in comparison today clubs would rather pay out for DNB/DUB DJ's than hardcore or trance DJ's it's just how times change i guess... And it's no surprise to anyone the biggest DJ's (Faithless. Chemical Brothers.. Fatboyslim, Deadmau5 do all rake in the cash, but notice that people like Rusko, Sub focus who are recognised as making it big don't really commit to making tunes anymore, they release a few but nothing major or promoted, pretty much because there making money at shows!
Re: How much $ are the "big" guys making
Got a mate who tried to book Rusko and said he was cheap as fuck.
Said it was about 500 Euros but even that seems unlikely cheap.

Most people who are decently named within Dubstep barely ask for a grand per show.
last year we could of got ramadanman for 800, El-B for 600 I think the others were 300? maybe a bit more.
If you're playing 2-4 shows a week its not a bad income and its live-able.
Most "big" names you're looking at 500-1200 to book them. I am not speaking about the people of the minute, like Skream, Excision, Rusko, etc,etc...
Though, it all depends what the venue is - what kind of event it is and distance for the artist to travel.
A lot of agencies will cut you a deal if you're booking them for a small venue, they will quote you depending on your ticket price vs capacity. So its all very hazy when thinking how much you -could- earn or how much people earn.

Even at £500 a show, if you played one show a week you'd earn £24k a year.
I guess if your a reasonably big named DJ/producer like that you really earn as much as you can be bothered to tour.

Ye but the artist doesn't collect all that 500, think about it, Agents will take a cut of that, and even further Artists signed exclusively to one label are pretty much told where they are DJ'ing and a cut would go to the label they are signed to, it's not bad money, but i remember reso saying how it's been proven know from the likes of Mt.Eden etc.. that you can't just make your living from selling tunes, you HAVE to DJ, netsky taught himself after being sought after, but ye loads of artists i've spoke to don't decide there price there label does, if the label is putting out a lot of there songs, and paying for their digital release and for their dubs to be cut they are gunna charge you more than say the artist who has one EP on there label.
Re: How much $ are the "big" guys making
its a complex issue...
itll depend on a lot of parameters ... one thing i could ensure is that the more popular you are, the more safely u can put ur boundaries...
an artist could ask up to 10 grands for a show... and it is not illogical if its for a stadium-booked venue... but most of the time they could be bargained down to half the price (and even more).. it always depend on how u sell the venue... as long as they dont lose money and get a profit, most of them will consider the booking..
dj a-trak came to my town 2 years ago.. before barbara streisand, and while most of the hip people knew who it was.. amongst my village... noone knew him, even in his own province... (people speakin to him in english and shit hahah) and he was paid like 10 grands.. i know the promoters...
he couldve been bargained down... it depends on what u offer... exposure/hotel/sightseeing.. and also on what the artist is doing the day before/after... ive seen some prices shrink, or swell ... all because of perks and leaks... most of them go by the $ but itll be highly dependent on a LOT of factors... and they'll consider the booking if they don't lose money in certain circumstances..
lets just say that being ''big'' allows u to put your boundaries where YOU want... and also to focus solely on that.. and thats the cool part of it in my book...

I think perhaps your too used to the standard pop music industry model.Dublicious wrote:Ye but the artist doesn't collect all that 500, think about it, Agents will take a cut of that, and even further Artists signed exclusively to one label are pretty much told where they are DJ'ing and a cut would go to the label they are signed to, it's not bad money, but i remember reso saying how it's been proven know from the likes of Mt.Eden etc.. that you can't just make your living from selling tunes, you HAVE to DJ, netsky taught himself after being sought after, but ye loads of artists i've spoke to don't decide there price there label does, if the label is putting out a lot of there songs, and paying for their digital release and for their dubs to be cut they are gunna charge you more than say the artist who has one EP on there label.
It's very rare for EDM artists to have label based all inclusive contracts like that. Most people sign tunes independently and most people I know do all their booking stuff themselves. Obviously most bigger name artists are gonna have an agent but that cut is negligible really. Everyone knows you don't make any money off selling tunes in EDM. That's why nobody has even mentioned it in this thread because it' not worth talking about.
I have a mate (minimal techno not dubstep) who has picked up £300 - £500 for nights before and it all went straight in his pocket. He's not even that big really outside of the local area.
Also, part of the reason Mt Eden won't ever make money off tunes sales is because their 'fanbase' are idiot kids that will never pay for tunes in their lives. Though I wasn't aware they had actually had an official release yet?

Re: How much $ are the "big" guys making
Ok. So this is how it goes... Booking depends on a plethora of things, from city, to budget, to personal relations.
Often artists have manager and agents who take about 30+ % of income along with basic traveling costs ( outside of hotels and planes ).
In the US an artist will get the biggest fees in places like LA, Miami and Denver. Lower fees - New York, Baltimore, San Diego.
Festivals can provide bigger budgets or none at all. It's all relative, all relative. Creating a brand for yourself requires lots of time and work but if it's a brand said artist wants to associate themselves with, that can have a huge impact on the outcome of fee.
Hope I answered some of your questions.

Re: How much $ are the "big" guys making
You have no idea how big some events are, then. Heard of PHAT? NZ NYE event. pulls 15k+ for dubstep, dnb.etc. Heard of Truth? 10-15k for a lot of their sets, especially to big crowds. Rusko would be pulling 10k easy. Skrillex at least that. Saw him play to 25,000 punters. Our tickets here are $120+. Do the math. Oh, and on another note - Pendulum, kings of the DnB world (in terms of $$$) - $150k for a NYE set. Just sayin'.dubmatters wrote:Rusko for 10K+ LOL
