the one thing that doesn't sit well with me is that Musharraf must've known that OBL was in Pakistan all this time, but either kept this information down for $$$, or as political leverage with the muslim brotherhood.

I think there has to be a level of blind eye shit going on. Talking with a few friends still in the military, about this time last year they stopped talking with Afghan/Pakistan forces about their high level intel operations. Basically just stopped asking for permission and magically the intel became more accurate.
I don't expect there to be any public fallout from this but behind closed doors I'm sure the US is telling them "if you can't clean up your leaks we're going to work around you from here on out"
In the middle east people take on mythical status fairly quickly. I expect this to have the same effect as when Hussein was captured as far as people feeling free to finally go against them and their ideals. Not comparing this to iraq, simply the notion of taking down a figurehead and how seeing a seemingly untouchable figured captured/killed completely changes how people process the situation.
Re: Obama announces that Osama Bin Laden is dead
decapitating the heads of organizations is something that only ever has an effect for a limited time period. in some respects, its going to have little impact beyond the obvious monetary savings of having this gigantic operation to find him now finally over. its certainly not going to stop them at all. sebastian junger in his book fire, talks about what you're saying in regards to the high level intel, and about how it selectively becomes clear or foggy whenever convenient. when junger was in afghanistan, many times he documented during the tora bora bombings, that the ISI would regularly feed good intel with bad intel, so that they themselves would appear to the pakistani media as on the "hot pursuit" of alqaeda, when in reality they probably were just making sure to give US taxpayers our money's worth, and keep the payments coming. so we bombed some mountains and caves with results, and some purely for spectacle or to say that we did. its very interesting to see the difference between musharaf when he was on the payroll, and outspoken against alqaeda, but quiet when the money dried up. even more so when bhutto was killed, and it exposed just how corrupt he really was, both internally in Pakistan, but also regionally.pkay wrote:seckle wrote:the one thing that doesn't sit well with me is that Musharraf must've known that OBL was in Pakistan all this time, but either kept this information down for $$$, or as political leverage with the muslim brotherhood.

Re: Obama announces that Osama Bin Laden is dead
It's the permission to go against the thing you fear that will be stepping stone. Afghanistan is/was still in fear of Al Qaeda and no one dare go against them. This will change that for some and start to pull the string that unravels the sweater. I bet the amount of general intel gathered in afghanistan skyrockets the next few months.seckle wrote:

In the middle east things just get to godlike status quickly and Osama hit that. For some it'll be a martyr rallying cry, for others it will be a burden lifted off their backs.

The whole sea burial thing REEKS of shadiness. As far as I know, we've never done that for any of our other worst enemies that have been killed in combat, so it's perplexing why the US gov't would suddenly become so religiously sensitive.

Re: Obama announces that Osama Bin Laden is dead
Furthermore, it's not like the US is somehow morally above gleefully posting pictures of corpses for the public to fawn over, do you guys remember when Uday and Qusay were killed? I dunno if the media made a huge deal out of it there but out here, pics of their bloated corpses were everywhere. I don't just mean pics of their corpses, I mean like CLOSE-UPs of their faces in which you could see how they'd been mutilated and shit.
Yet we're supposed to believe that the Government has suddenly become much more tactful and religiously sensitive between now and then?
