Tristan Mieras - Dark/Atmospheric Dubstep/Downtempo

Post by Tristan Mieras » Tue May 03, 2011 9:22 am

Hey guys! New to the forum, not new to dubstep (or obviously music in general)

A quick little bit about myself, I've been an electronic DJ for about 3 or 4 years (Trance, techno, hardstyle, dubstep, house, ect.) and have been making music for a little over a half a year now I'd say... I've only completely (minus some mastering, don't have a proper pair of studio monitors yet) finished 4 songs, but a ton just waiting to be finished... DFRNT was actually the person to give me inspiration to make dark/atmospheric dubstep, tried it, found i had a strong passion for making this style of music... I would eventually like to spread to other genres (trance, house, ect.) but for now I'm sticking with dark/atmospheric dubstep/downtempo/IDM... I would like to release an EP, called Scarred Beauty (sig) with 5 songs... been looking for a label, but haven't found one yet, so i decided to probably go indie with it... and still havent found an appropriate music making and/or DJ name... so sticking with my real name for now till I have one that I like. anyways thats enough about me for now... I've provided the 4 songs I've completed for you all to listen to and give me some feedback.

Soundcloud
The first song I actually completed, found out after playing it on some different sound systems there wasn't as much bass as I hoped there'd be (like said, the speakers I'm using now are a bit more bass happy, so I have to compensate by adding a little more bass than necessary) but am very pleased with how it turned out

Soundcloud
The second completed... this one has the bass XD this one is more atmospheric (compared to the darker side of Chosen as the First) and i have gotten lots of compliments from this song among peers

Soundcloud
Third completed song.. this one is the worst mastering wise... the kick isnt as strong as I want it to be and the claps have too much treble... this song is more of a darker background with a more atmospheric higher end with the synths

Soundcloud
This song definitely took a turn with how my style of music has been going... got the inspiration to make a more ambient song when I visited a space pictures site and it had very chill atmospheric ambient music... and actually I started this one while in mid-process of making Dreaded Sense till finally I sat down and said to myself, "Lets finish the original first, so then i can make this remix to it" so when the Dreaded Sense was completed, the Long Road Home Remix came shortly after, and the way I have it set is to go directly from Dreaded Sense to the Long Road Home Remix

Thats what I have so far... I have two more darker dubstep songs that are mid-process (nearly done with one) but I dont feel either of them will fill the last space I would like for the EP... stopped working on music as I have been working on mixes so i can get my DJ'ing out more and start performing at places... anyways let me know what you think!

Big up dude nice work!

It's good to see you know what is needed in your tunes, saves a lot of time for us :) but definitely feeling the vibe on the second tune. Dope atmosphere in all your songs though! I would love ambient synths such as yours to use in my own tunes (I can never seem to get the beautiful dark ambient synths I like which you display in your songs, especially the last).
As for the first, you were definitely right about it needing more sub (also, maybe take the kick down a little or cut a bit of the low end off).
The third tune, I think if you replace the clap with a sort of deep-mid punchy snare, it would really hit the spot.

All in all I'm loving where you're headed with this and I look forward to the finished product! :)

Thanks a lot there mate! Yea I'm just waiting till I get the studio monitors I want before like doing any hardcore mastering to it yet, cuz listening to the songs I know what i want it to sound like... as for Chosen as the First I can definitely see what you're talking about... and a snare might be better than a clap for Dreaded Sense... I'll give that a try... thanks for the reviews there man! And thanks for the welcome =D
