New York Record Stores

Post by mofomaphone » Thu May 03, 2007 1:44 am

I'm planning a trip to new york soon and was wondering if there were any good stores to shop for dubstep records in soho, aside from sounds of the universe.

kim's video. go to the 2nd floor. enter to the dvd section and keep walking back until you find the vinyl racks. look for the dubstep section.

AFAIK, kims and BBS are the only places stocking dubstep vinyl. NYC just saw a big wave of record shops closing... beat street, vinylmania.. satellite carries mostly DJ gear and hard house anthems...

but it's a good sign that both kim's & BBS have recently taken the dubstep sections and started organizing them by label.

OK I actually went down there to check out their dubstep selection and maybe I was too distracted by the sun's glorious rays but ummm... I couldn't find the storefront. I got to like 179 Orchard and then there's this massive construction project going on where 181 would be. Did I miss a secret entrance? Should I have used the Staff of Ra?

Jammyland wasn't open either, so a total bust.

you were right there. bblessing is the new name for breakbeatscience. the storefront looks like this now:

it's just to the left side of the condo being built.

Breakbeat Science is the hardest damn store in the world to find. It took me two visits to Orchard St, probabl a combined hour and a half searching and I had to ask a lot of bewildered people if they knew where it was.

turntable labs is really nice... tiny tiny tiny storefront considering the bottomless crates of their online store.
i though it was kind of hard to find as well... but it's a nice neighbourhood, so if you miss it, at least it'll be a nice walk!

hahaha... i was out of town pretty much all of last year and hadn't thought to check in on the fact that i knew they were moving. i headed in from bk to get my vinyl fix and almost had a breakdown when i couldn't find it... then i saw the BBS sticker on the front of bblessing... phew.

what's there to like? if d&b diehards can't find it, how the hell are casual shoppers going to find it? ridiculous setup. tiny room in the back (like some peep show) with very limited stock and unhelpful staff. the guy who i asked for help from last time didn't even know who ed rush and optical were. biggest d&b retailer in north america, reduced to this?

pfff.
