how do you guys find your vocals?

Post by lyons238 » Fri May 13, 2011 7:45 am

i have a tough time finding good vocals that arent over used by everybody and their mum. some style vocals sort of like rusko's hold on etc. does anyone have any methods of hunting out vocals or what? i dont normally listen to the style of music the vocals are coming from, so their hard to find for me.

Well, start. Grab a random album from a charity store. Dig out something you've not listened to in time. Go through your parents CD collection.

Listen to stuff you don't usually listen to. Samples can come from pretty much anywhere, it's just a case of putting the work in to try and find them.

Start whereever. Pick an album at random. Listen to it. Find out who worked on the album. Google them. Find out what else they've done and who they've worked with. YouTube their shit. Google again any names that come up. More listening.

Grab yourself a 6 pack of beer/couple of zoots, and dedicate an evening to just listening to music and researching it online. Sample whatever sounds good (or sounds shit if you want to make it work), and just build up your sound library.

Ohhhh, Rando's just reminded me - the free sample CDs that come with FutureMusic/Computer Music. You should be able to find some either in 2nd hand shops on eBay for dirt cheap, they've got vocals on them.

If you're really stuck getting started, Google 'funk soul blog' and check the first few that come up. They should give you a couple of names to get started with.

And hey, in addition to gathering samples and finding new music, you might hear some amazing next level 70s production trick and be like "daaaaaaaaaamn I need to try and recreate that".

Thift shops > grab box of viny/cd > ask "whats the best deal you can do me on this?" > go home > sample.

what software do you use to sample? audacity?

say i was doing this in FL, have a shitload of cds to sample, what do you think would be the easiest way? import all songs into computer, open fl, open a sampler, click the folder and find the song on the hard drive and then go from there?

Audacity. It's fucking awesome for sampling.

i would load it into edison, find a part that I like, cut or trim, drag that into a sampler or the playlist and use that...

For CD's I rip a high quality version of the CD and drag it into Audacity and first find parts which have not much going on in the wave form.. See if I like those (since they're the easiest part to sample/work with) then listen to the rest of the song to find other parts... Just roughly chop parts (leaving some room for editing in Fruity).. Export and move onto the next song.

For Vinyl I listen to the vinyl from start > finish with Audacity up while doing other stuff, everything what stands out for me, I wheel it back and record.

I tried samplingin Fruity but audacity is light weight and do you really wanna be looking at FL all day sampling, then make a beat with it? Thats just an eye-sore.

Then next its all about processing to get them to fit in with ur track! easier said then done.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Fuck steve jobs. Ive had the same tunes on my fone for months because itunes wont let me put anything else on. Then last night (after an hour) I managed to get one of my new tunes on before it decided to stop working again. Not only that but it also randomly decided not to work as a modem anymore after a few months. Htc ftw next time.
