Lil' Wayne's song "John" sounds like 0800 Dub.
Lil Wayne's new song sounds a little like 0800 dub in the background, or is it just me?
Maybe I just listened to 0800 dub one too many times or some shit but man, it sounds similar as fuck. Heard this song on the radio the other day and was like "damn, sounds like someone knocked off Skream"
Maybe a coincidence. Whatever. Anyways...whatcha think? Is it at least similar or am I nuts? (obviously subtract the rapping)

Was the Arp patch that Skream used not a stock FL one (or so I read somewhere)? The producer of the Lil Wayne track might of used the same one.
That 0800 dub just reminds me of how much a classic badman Skream is.

A leeetle bit I guess. Although I don't think I would have realised if you hadn't of said it.

It does sound like a standard arpeggio, mixed with an 8-bit-ish synth noise.Pedro Sánchez wrote:Was the Arp patch that Skream used not a stock FL one (or so I read somewhere)? The producer of the Lil Wayne track might of used the same one.

Never heard this John tune, but the arp is similar yes. It's not exactly an intricate pattern though, so could be coincidence. With all the attention some of the top dubstep producers have gotten in hip hop circles the last couple of years, who knows...
Lil Wayne had a dubsteppish tune a couple of years ago produced by Pharrel, so maybe he's into it.
Also, seems Polow da Don made this tune, he's worked with Rihanna who is on Jay-Z's label, both of whom worked with Chase & Status, so I'm pretty sure they know Skream's tunes.

sigh... i addressed this before with a joker tune that someone accused another person of ripping off. No offense but a lot of people in dubstep don't understand music composition/theory and don't recognize very basic technique.
it's a variance on a C diminished -----> C Augmented arpeggio.
Any patch/pad/piano/sample of someone taking a shit and played in this manner is going to sound similar.
It is a very basic musical concept and is why it sounds so similar.... its been played for hundreds of years
go to about 1 minute 20 seconds in
it's the same audible familiarity as making a Cm chord on your guitar and randomly plucking the strings on your guitar. Anyone else who makes a Cm chord and plucks on their guitar, while may not be the exact same progression, will still sound very similar.

sorry to sound like a dick.... honestly didn't intend for it to be that way
get bothered when EDM folks, desparately trying to find pop culture borrowing from their genre of choice.... mistake ripping off a tune for using musical technique.
i shouldn't bust balls for not knowing
but there is your explanation, take it or leave it
