SCANONE:
This long awaited three track EP from ScanOne has been getting some heavy rotation in many sets since late last year, and now it’s been fully tested it’s ready to be unleashed upon an unsuspecting and ultimately grateful public. ScanOne is the production persona of Yellow Machines owner Jude Greenaway, and he’s selected this blast of dark, introspective bass-heavy electronics as an intent-declaring opener for the label’s 2011 campaign. Nodding to his impressive musical history, the EP kicks off with ‘Breedle’, fusing Radioactive Man-esque machine funk electro with junglist and hardcore influences. Built around a rolling old skool drumbreak and resonating with warm, pulsing mechanoid basslines, it builds into a driving, darkly epic yet introspective beast of a track, calling to mind late nights and dimly-lit warehouse raves with sour, dissonant bleeps reflecting off the damp walls. On the flip, the mood is different with a dark bashment treatment for ‘Feep’, as IDM sound design electronics flow through massive 808 bass drums, while brittle wintery melodies and modulated chimes flicker and sparkle amid a dark space of intricately programmed rhythms. Contrastingly, ‘In Session’ is a mutant hip hop electro track that fuses a pulsing synthetic bassline with dislocated, dub-delayed sampled vocals that would not sound out of place in one of Scanone's infamous audio visual sets. Infused with synth melodies that call to mind old Warp artists like Brothomstates, the track is reminiscent of ScanOne’s earlier works on labels like Blase and Combat. Simply put, this is yet another emphatically solid release from an increasingly strong label. All tracks have recently featured on Rob Booth’s fine Electronic Explorations radio show, with superb audience feedback.
