Can anybody recommend a freeware video editor?

NO! get final cut pro! its much better then premier, trust. if you havent got a mac then go out and buy one and then get FCP!

also, to the best of my knowledge, no, there arent any really good free ones. obviously with it being such a massively big task to make that sort of software not many of them are both good and free. much better to stick with the torrents. on my uni course theres probably 80 people who have there own computers and editing software and probably 2 have paid for it. certainly mac arent really that bothered about pirated FCP - as uni's, schools, companies etc pay massive subscriptions for the license. also, as apple own the software and its mac only you have to buy a mac to use it, effectively making the mac hardware a big expensive dongle.

Yeah I use Final Cut, moved from Premier after CS3 but I was hesitant in telling him to straight up go torrent the latest version of "x" NLE but it seems DSF doesn't mind as long as it's not a DAW or an artists music

OP uses windows so have a look at the Avid stuff, Edius Pro or Premier Pro CS5 or whatever number they at now, granted you will need to have some idea of what your doing to get going.

For effects Adobe After Effects every time.

Yeah that's fair, I just find it funny how hard people come down on torrents and filesharers when the files/programs in question have to do with music but these same people have no problem downloading the latest movie or Tv series.

Yeah I'm definitely seeing where they are coming from in that someone like Paramount Pictures or Warner Bros have tons of coin and all the actors and crew are paid regardless of sales vs some guy making music in his home studio who is not getting paid when people are downloading his releases for free. I guess you gotta draw the line somewhere right?

In the end if it's a faceless corporation alot of people are going to find it easier to click that link and save themselves a stack of cash.

Lightworks indeed, I have only used it for a few hours but I like it so far, and being open source should only improve it. Definitely one to watch.

http://www.virtualdub.org is another amazing free open source editor. It can do some very advanced stuff, but the interface is not what most people would like.
There are also many free filters/plugins for it all over the net, and loads of tutorials.

on the subject of editing software. does anybody know how to change it so when i use audio keyframes to fade something out its a convex curve instead of a concave one...?
