Where shall my extra money go?
In 4 weeks i'll be getting around 2700$. I'm looking to spend it all on music production equipment. Even though I'm only 3 months into making music and still have a lot to learn, I still want to spend every dollar I have so I can learn how to make music on professional equipment. I live in a small town so I got nothing better to do than sit inside my house and geek it, but still I enjoy every minute of it. Music is fascinating and I love it. I came to the forum to ask for some advice on how I should spend my money and possibly get different ideas. My goal is to be able to make really good trance, dubstep , or progressive house music within the next 2-3 years and yes I'm definitely preparing myself for the future.
I'm currently set up with a M-Audio 25, Set of amazing speakers with a sub under my desk, External sound card and Beats by Dre headphones.

Right now I already know I'm buying a M-Audio Venom keyboard for my synths, but with the other 2100$ I'm not sure what to spend on. I had possible ideas of buying a DJ tables just for fun and a new laptop. I'm not really wanting to get deep into DJing or anything but I think it might possibly open up my mind a bit on making my music having some slight experience with playing with the DJ tables. My other idea is to buy another desk in my room and spend 1500$ on a really nice Dell Studio XPS and buy a terabyte external hard drive and switch projects back and forth between my laptop whenever I go to the college and have nothing else to work on between classes.
Also this isn't the only money I'll have in a long time, I get around 2200$ per term from college and have no financial expenses. I can always wait another term to buy more things. If I don't buy DJ equipment this term then I will next term. The only reason I wanna buy DJ equipment is because there might be a chance where I get something out of them and get good with them and possibly do shows for some cash in the future. I already have the program for DJing and everything. I don't mean to make a huge post gloating about money or anything, I just need a bit of help and advice on what to invest into to progress as fast as possible into making music.

But seriously, if you don't know what to spend it on just save, and start looking at buying property. Sounds like a better plan than spending it on music gear just for the sake of it.

Re: Where shall my extra money go?
Dont be in a rush to spend your money. Like 3za said if there isnt something that you really need then why not just save it untill you find some thing that would be really useful for you. If i were in your shoes i would possible get another midi controller something that has lots of knobs and buttons (APC 40). Also I'd be careful about using beats by dre's tp produce as they are quite colored

$2100, huh?
Get different headphones if you're using them for production. I've heard Beats by Dr Dre aren't flat frequency, and have more bass, though you should look it up first.
You have a keyboard, some speakers, a decent soundcard and a computer already it seems.
Buy the most expensive cheese burger you can find in your city/town. Always a good use of money if you have THAT much to throw around

You could definitely use some monitors or good headphones for monitoring. Don't know what speakers
those are but I can't imagine them being any good for monitoring.
Also listen to monkfish, his dad is jewish.

I only use beats by dre to blast music into my ears as loud as I want. I forgot to mention, The reason why I'm looking to buying a new computer is because my computer is old and slow. It has 4gbs of ram and when I stack synths with multiple Razor and Massive columns my program seems to crash. I recently reformatted only a few weeks ago. I just hate not being able to use all my sounds to the fullest and having a slow computer.

I always went by and never asked this... What are monitors for? This may sound dumb but is it just to organize your sounds better or what? Is there a way where I can watch arangement view and the regular collumn view at the same time or something? What do most people use monitors for?AxeD wrote:You could definitely use some monitors or good headphones for monitoring. Don't know what speakers

Re: Where shall my extra money go?
they are speakers that accurately reproduce the sound being sent to them. they have a flat freq response instead of say a hi-fi system that boosts lows and hi's.Chees3 wrote:I always went by and never asked this... New computer, monitors and save the rest to maybe use for things that come up like if you want to pay for your song to be mastered.

Re: Where shall my extra money go?
IMO.. I wouldn't buy any more midi controllers..
unless you research it and decided it will benefit your work flow..
when I first started I had money to blow.. bought monitors, soundcard, headphones, 88 key midi keyboard, padkontrol, acp40, korg R3, and some other stuff..
the only thing I have remaining from that are the monitors.. not that the other items weren't good products.. just that they didn't really benefit my workflow.. I'm much better now with just a 49 key midi controller.
so I sold/traded the other items.. trades and trades, and sold and bought and sold again, etc
but I've ended up now with quality DJ gear and I'm very pleased with how everything turned out..
my point is.. don't buy anything you don't need, but also don't sweat over purchases because you can always trade and sell!

Re: Where shall my extra money go?
new 'phones bro. beats by dre are crap for production...nice for listening, but theyre far from flat. get some sennheiser HD280 Pro's or something.
Re: Where shall my extra money go?
My troll meter is reading a 4 out of 10.
If you are real, it is totally clear that you don't know anywhere near enough to be buying stuff. Use that money to buy gold, and read the moneyshot thread, or whatever it is now called. It's probably a sticky. Read it, and understand everything within it. If you read that you'll know what you need to get started making music.
I was a young ignorant american consumer once too, I know the inertia of that drive, so if you must persist on this path, buy the best quality anything that you can. You will be able to sell it later for around the same price you bought it. Maybe even more if you are lucky.
pps, if you haven't bought that software that you are using, that would be at the top of the list to purchase.

+ Akg 240s then spend a little on enough vinyl to get you started and save the other $1500 for another day.Hypefiend wrote:learn how to mix. get some Technics 1210sChees3 wrote:In 4 weeks i'll be getting around 2700$. Exactly, I ment monitors as in flat response speakers.Gewze wrote:they are speakers that accurately reproduce the sound being sent to them. they have a flat freq response instead of say a hi-fi system that boosts lows and hi's.Chees3 wrote:I always went by and never asked this...
