Re: How would I make a Synth like this?

Post by theDisciple » Mon May 23, 2011 10:58 pm

Cheers for the advice. Im gonna spend alot more time looking at the synths section on this forum as well as playing around with the DAW I am using.

I know mt Eden and burial are different its just they both put soft sounds into their music. Kinda stuff i wanna make. I don't tend to like the dirty stuff, more of a chilled kinda guy...

Check my latest if you like chilled stuff - but tbh, you'll learn eventually why Mt. Eden is really disliked on this forum.

i prefer the mt eden remix to that one posted above. don't know why people hate them, its a good remix. some of their other tunes leave a lot to be desired tho.

as for making an airy synth, adding reverb will soften it, and experiment with the waves. i.e triangle, saw, square etc. change the envelope to give it a softer attack also if thats what you want.

Yeah I will check them out when I have some free time, why are mt Eden not liked on this forum? Mainstream?

Thank you for the advise,I think Ive just gotta spend more time with the synths.

People dislike them because Mt. Eden's "remixes" are basically the whole original track with a dubstep beat/bassline underneath. Aka, minimal effort.

Any have any ideas about the lead synth at 0:35. I've gotten close, but it doesn't sound quite right. I'm using Reason 5.

Yeah I don't get why everybody hates on mt. eden either. I completely agree that some of his bass sounds suck (for example the main bass sound from the imogen heap hide and seek remix. But on that song he uses the vox in a simple yet really cool way, and I love the drums. And it sure beats the hell out of roksonix's remix of the same song. That song literally just sounds like he made a random song and then listened to hide and seek and then decided to put them together. Granted I am not claiming to be even one millionth as talented as roksonix, to me the song sounds like hornshwog and the melody doesnt go well at all with the song. I do think he overuses his sounds a bit much (for example the low passed reese he always uses), but that having been said, a lot of his songs are simple yet really cool to me. Just my 0.10 cents anyhow.

the sound at the very start, its probably very simple but i really dont have a clue where to start

man everybody who uses that sound in hiphop just samples it. i have no idea how to synthesize it but i got a sample

Anyways, here's how I made this sound. Soundcloud

Keep in mind that I don't know how they did it exactly, but this is how I got close.

I used MASSIVE

I only used one oscillator, set to a saw wave with the wavetable position at about 5 oclock. I assigned envelope 1 to modulate the pitch up 2 octaves (24). For the envelope I used a long attack and medium decay, but turned the decay level all the way up so that the pitch does not fall back down as the note is held. I set filter one to daft filter (a more pronounced Low pass filter in massive). Set the cutoff to about 4 oclock. Use the same envelope thats controlling the pitch to modulate the resonance so as the note is held, the resonance increases. Modulate the resonance from 0 to about 12:00. I added some chorus with a very low depth and rate, but 100 % wet. this spreads the sound out a bit so it sounds wider but not too much, other wise it will start to sound weak and washed out. I also added some timed delay with it set to medium dry/wet and low feedback. As for the voicing section I set the the max and unisono voices to 5 and turned the pitch cutoff on, and cranked the knob to the right just enough to begin to see the first white line. I don't know what notes it starts off on but I can tell it's more than one, I started with D and G. Also it sounds like he resampled it and cut out the beginning of the sample so as to not get the attack portion. TA da. I know it's probably not exact, but it comes close and it really is simple.

If you dont have massive, Ill translate what i did. Use 2-3 saw waves and detune them ever so slightly from each other. Use an envelope with a long attack and full sustain to modulate the pitch of these oscillators up 2 octaves. You could also use a ramp up LFO with a very slow rate if you wanted to. Apply a low pass filter to the oscillators with the cutoff almost all the way up so that most of the sound is let through except those in the high high frequencies. Use the same envelope to modulate the resonance which gives it the kind of shiny sound (dont know if thats a good description of the sound). THen apply some light chorus which adds more voices to spread the sound out. You dont want these voices to sound too distinct though cuz it will make the overall sound weaker. Add in some synched delay with a lower feedback so it doesnt sound too echoey. VIOLA!!!
Hope this helped.

This this is cool. Thx for all the helps. This closer to what I wanted than the Nero one but I couldnt remember what my other, better example was. How do I make the other sound aswell?

cool.

but you guys do know that this sound is drummaboy's tag rite?????

its not everybody that uses it in hip hop, its just that everybody buys beats from him...

Ok, the other sound is much easier to make in massive, however, I must warn you that I resampled it at least 3 times so your finished product won't sound exactly like the sound I used in the song. But anywho, here goes. Once again I used massive in fl studio.

OSCILLATOR 1: Chrome, set at the generic octave, set to formant in the spectrum sections, set wavetable position to about 9:00, turn the intensity all the way down and the amp all the way up.

OSCILLATOR 2/3-> turned off

MODULATION OSCILLATOR:
bring the pitch down to -12 and apply phase modulation to oscillator 1 with the knob at about to about 8:00. mess around with this a bit but you will see that if you go past about 9:00 it really starts to drastically change the overall sound.

FILTER SECTION = empty. rather than using the filter, I used gating on this one.

FX SECTION
fx 1: Classic tube distortion. dry/wet at 11:00 and drive around 12.
FX2: dimension expander: dry/wet to 10:30 and size to 10:30 as well.
EQ SECTION:
Boost to about 12:30 and high shelf to about the same or a bit more.

OSCILLATOR SECTION
just bring the time on the glide to about 12:30.

VOICING SECTION
Max set to 16 and unisono set to 3. turn off polyphon and set to monophono. Turn the pitch cutoff button on and move the cursor to the right so you can see about 3-5 of the smaller white lines (another good thing to do here would be to use an envelope or LFO to modulate the cursor so it spreads the voices out more and less, giving the sound more character and movement)

INSERT 1 SECTION
-Sine shaper. Dry wet at 12:00 and use an envelope to modulate the drive from 12-1:00. For this envelope, I used a medium attack and turned the level all the way down on the decay so that the drive goes up to a point but then comes right back down as opposed to going up and plateauing.

The last thing that I did in massive was used the Macro one which controls the vibrato. Throughout the song I turn the vibrato up or down but if the sound has no vibrato it sounds much more flat and rather boring.

As for the effects, I used an exciter (camel space has a great exciter) to add some higher harmonics and used camel phat for some more distortion. and then equed, then resampled, then repeat with some more subtle effects. Once again before I applied all this distortion cut out everything below 150-200 hz and then resample it, then add sub bass underneath.
hope this helps. Btw, this explaining stuff in detail is a giant pain in the ass. How do I upload a screen shot?
