Re: A healthy time for music
SBTRKT has been putting out a lot this year, and they all sound amazing! Looking forward to his album.

In terms of electronic music, yes its probably the hottest ive ever seen it in my entire life! But mainsteam rock/pop/rap is really, reallyyyyy getting obnoxious. Societys obsession with auto-tone and repetitive house drum beats is driving me mad. Rap used to be about bein a gangsta, now its about getting drunk and partying. Don't even get me started with the retardified rock lyrics, not to mention the power chords!
Pop music has always sucked in my opinion, so that hasn't gotten much worse

rap was first about partying and having a good time, then it split - with one side wanting to be gangsters and the other side wanting to be "conscious"... both were pretty funny imo, and i'm glad its back to its humble beginnings about just having fun!

hahaha that is true, i definitly think alot of big rappers need to get more creative though.
Re: A healthy time for music
Rap has gone soooo pop. I used to remember Black Eyed Peas being actually good, now that Fergie has joined in they are nothing but a bunch of crappy greedy mainstream sellouts that do garbage clubby pop music.

nahhhhh, its after fergie went single for a little bit, then rebanded. Thats when they went to garbage. Didn't listen to them a whole lot before this, but i know its nowhere close to being the same. Rap is boring I find... the ones who try to be conscious have now become so large in number that even that "sub-genre" has become overly saturated.
That said, the Be album by Common is lovely.
The best rap album in a LONG time is Kanye's MBDTF. It just sounds so... expensive. I just got the impression that he had got his shit together - personally and musically - and produced a brilliant album. Listen to it all the way through, it is quite something.

Just went through the Holy Other EP stream here http://www.alteredzones.com/posts/1396/ ... y-other-u/ and I'm very impressed, getting 3am vibes from it.
Eagerly anticipating Clam Casino's EP too.
Was a bit weary toward Tri Angle records, but they really are impressing me now.

Grandmaster Flash was doing the party stuff and the conscious stuff from the late 70's early 80's so I tend to think conscious rap predates the gangster thing. I also think there's a place for protest in music and it follows in a tradition of socially aware musicians writing about the lived experience of both the artist and the audience. Like it never hurt Bob Marley to be able to do both and the rap discography would be much worse off if rap had stuck to just having fun.fractal wrote:rap was first about partying and having a good time, then it split - with one side wanting to be gangsters and the other side wanting to be "conscious"... both were pretty funny imo, and i'm glad its back to its humble beginnings about just having fun!

Lots of great wax getting pressed in the last few years, and it seems like there's been a lot more limited pressings these days...good time to be a vinyl head imo.
