Hey there,

A bit of feedback: Charging £60 for a logo design isn't going to do you or your clients any favours.

Chances are anyone respectable looking for a logo will feel your service is so cheap that you possibly can't be doing the amount of work required in the research and development side of things to develop a proper logo or branding identity and so will likely avoid it. And you can't possibly be justifying your work with such a low price tag.

Logo design and design for brand identity is something that takes a good amount of time to develop. It's something that requires research in to audience, marketplace, relevance and more - and it's something that requires development, working with clients to create something that works for everyone involved.

That process can take weeks, if not months, and as a result for a logo - £60 just seems obscene.

Identity and brand design is a big part of my profession, so seeing this sort of thing worries me. I think people forget that a crazy free font, and a bit of distressing on some type is going to make an awesome logo. Inclusion of cliched speakers or some go-faster swooshes is somehow going to make a logo appeal to kids these days. It seems pretty misguided, and even if you do catch the essence of a current tred. It's just that - you're not setting any benchmarks here, you're not breaking any boundaries. Some of your sales pitch needs work too - "completely Bespoke logo design" - all logos should be bespoke. By their very nature, something done as a design for a client is bespoke. Tailored to their needs. "free promotion across the Knigh Design Social Networks" - where's the relevance? This is at your discretion for your own promotional purposes only. If I'm a record label or an artist - getting my design plastered across some irrelevant networks, next to other logos you've done, it's of no consequence to me. Personally I'd request that you didn't do that if it were my logo. Also - no need to capitalise the words "bespoke" "logo" "social" "networks" "blog" "page" or "branding" - that's just bad grammar.

I would suggest you keep working at your craft - build up your skills and look at logos that work. Look at logos that have lasted years and years (start with the logos of Paul Rand, and Saul Bass) - ones that you maybe associate great brand experiences with - then think about why they're successful - simple shapes, working in 1 colour, working at small sizes, easily applied to many different sizes and formats.

There's so much to learn and practice with logo and branding design that just firing up a few examples and hoping to snag a few clients with a cheap price tag just isn't going to cut it. You're not doing anyone any favours there. Anyone expecting a bargain will get what they pay for, and anyone worth designing for probably won't employ you.

I don't mean to be so negative - I'd really like you to prove me wrong. I'm just so frank, because if somebody doesn't give you this advice up front, you could end up in the dark about it all - and the more I can do to help you better yourself, the better you'll get, the more you'll learn and so on. (I like to help people - other forum users should back me up there - I'm just often super-frank about it, for fear of beating around the bush)

I've been designing professionally for about 7 years now, and it's only been in the past year or so I've been confident enough to give others advice. If you want examples of my work, here are a few:

Hey DFRNT.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, some great feedback! I've been debating with myself for a while as to whether or not I should even put prices online. But...

My prices vary from client-to-client, Corporate clients will get a completely different experience from Private clients, for example. I've taken the time to pitch exclusively to Solo Producers, DJs and Artists here, taking full consideration of the fact that, thanks to "the Music Industry" nowadays *disgruntled murmer*, there really isn't a lot of scope for any real kind of Budgeting when it comes to Independent labels or Solo Artists going it alone.
I've always understood the importance of good branding and Identity design and, being a Producer myself, know how hard it can be to catch your Target Audiences attention with a next-to-zero budget for branding.

These are the very basic rules I adhere to and have done for years. All my Logos have the same impact from sizes of 100 pixels to a 20 foot banner, I thought this was standard practice?
All my logos are built this way, just presented with colour to give examples of the different types of application that will follow. Release covers, Posters, Fliers etc. It's common knowledge that the trick is to keep colours to a minimum and impact to maximum.

this, too is basic, standard knowledge for any Designer.
When a client approaches me for a design, I always arm myself with as much knowledge as possible as to their Target Audience, their fans, their sound, product(s) and do a great deal of research in order to even think about beginning the work. I've just developed a routine that enables me to reach that "lightbulb moment" in a timely fashion.

I'll never under-sell my work, but, when trying to find business in a world that's dominated by websites like Digitalgreen, Logofresh, Bigblue and now even places like Moo offering supposedly "original/bespoke" Logo Design, it's becoming increasingly difficult for Solo Designers like myself to attract business without mentioning some sort of price, after all, sticking to a budget is important.

Your designs are good and I'd like to have a chat further if you're willing to share the time, PM me your email address. However, I could have done without the criticism on an open, public forum, thank you very much! ;)

Cheers,

Jase.
