FL Mixer Faders Questions

Post by In10t » Sun Jun 05, 2011 3:24 pm

A few questions about the FL mixer.

I've heard gain staging is good to avoid digital clipping, but why does this matter unless individual mixer channels clip in FL?

To me, even if I drive a mixer channel 24+ db, when I lower the master output it doesn't sound distorted. :/ Thoughts?

Also, I sometimes find my mixer faders too high and I can't boost some if I wanted too... then I have to resort to lowering every single track, which is a pain to do manually... ?

Also when I'm finished lowering every track, the feed into the compressor on the different buses is lowered. I've put a plugin at the top that boosts volume to compensate but that seems ridiculous.

I just had to make this post since I feel like a total idiot when I'm struggling with these problems.

Shitty workarounds are for mouth breathers.

Theeenks!

Okay, thats because clips dont happen until the master track... So by turning the master down, you keep it out of the red, and therefore, no clip.

Okay? Point is? Mix things low. Thats the whole idea behind mixing things low and not pushing the faders to the roof/pulling the master down, you have room to make adjustments.

Then set your compressors up after you apply proper gain staging?

Point taken, I just can't seem to take a systematic approach to dubstep/dnb with process heavy reeces/instruments :/ It always ends up being a mess of 50+ channels.

But I'll try to see if I can improve earlier on lol.

Thanks.

Dont do that.

Youll get much better sounds by focusing on making sick shit come straight from the synth.

From there, an effect or two on top sweetens the already sweet patch, but this whole notion of people slapping 50+ mixer tracks worth of nonsense onto a sound...

You should KNOW what your trying to achieve, and with that much going on, I kinda get the feeling your just clickin blindly =/...

Thanks again Basic... I know my way around a synth like the front of my dick, and my many mixer tracks are for automation and easy sculpting.

I'd post a reece, but that would come off as try hard lol.

Have you tried multiple distortions? It can sometimes make your already perfect reece perfecter haha.

After each distortion, maybe EQ and filter, even multiband compression etc.

You see how I need A LOT of mixer tracks? :)

I can see how someone can, i just kinda feel like its overkill and destructive to sounds... Like, when Im working in my synth, I know what waveforms a-b are going to sum to, ect, whereas with piles of distortion and all that I feel like Im leaving things to fate and chance kinda... Then again, dont often use reeses either haha, so... All good, whatever sounds good, just saying dont get so lost in post-processing you forget what sound you were going for in the firs tplace if that makes sense?

i turn my speakers loud and all my channels are peaking around -10 - -8 db and my master around -6 - -5db, so turn your speakers up if you cant hear things, not your channel faders,
