just saw this thread for the first time. i live in new zealand where brostep is completely dominant. but reading this has re-affirmed the fact that no matter how ignorant to bass music your demographic is, there are always those who are just like you and want the music to speak on a deeper(lol) level. if you want to bang mingas keep it off the d floor!

Was having a think about this thread over a brew and a slice of toast and figured there's a lot more which can be said in terms of a guide to starting with dubstep over and above listening to the "right" tunes. You need to prepare the ground for understanding those tunes first of all!

So here's my own advice to anyone discovering dubstep:

a) Move your body to the music - you can't appreciate the music until you engage with it wholly, and that means bodily. Your body is more important to your understanding than most people realise - dancing is essential to understanding music! Let it become you.

b) Go to a reputable event and listen to it amidst people who love it.

c) Have a go at making the music yourself. Listen closely to production techniques, and get familiar with the structure of the tunes.

d) Pay attention to the culture and the history, where the music is coming from and where we are now - it can be difficult to see the forest for the trees sometimes but remember the historicity of music - this came from a time and a place!

question.. i'm only just getting into this genre but loving it a lot, there's a lot that doesn't interest me and i have a feeling that's what you guys consider to be true dubstep and what i like is what you like to call "brostep".. so UKF, is it a label? a collection of artists? a company that releases dubstep albums? and is it considered "brostep"? i find the majority of the stuff that gets me excited comes up with UKF backgrounds on youtube..

this is where you can go to discuss that particular type of dubstep. there are threads about it on this forum, and plenty of people who love the style, but unfortunately those threads end up in flames usually. good luck and bless

Not mindless self-promotion, merely an education in bass culture:
