Granular synthesis...
I've heard this is good for creating SFX and crazy noises so, can anyone direct me to a synth or sampler (preferably freeware) that provides granular synthesis, as well as some sort of explanation as to what it is? I couldn't find anything on search?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Granular synthesis...
The march issue of Computer music covers this subject.
The freeware version mentioned was: GranulOSO (http://www.roughdiamondsproductions.com)
-says comes with powerful filters.
Lidsquids Grapheed synth (http://www.lidsquid.de)
- says its as simple a synth as you can get <---may be worth starting here.
(Taken from Computer music article)
- Its all about dividing a piece of sound continuously until your left with a very tiny portion - a grain.
By manipulating, stretching, duplicating and otherwise messing around with these grains you can create entirly new and interesting sounds.
Although the most common use for granular synthesis is for the creation of huge sweeping pads it can also be used for melodic parts too.
-Imagine that you've taken a piece of audio and cut it with the scissors tool in your daw into thousands of pieces -grains -. If you were to rearange, reverse, pitchshift and otherwise maipulate them, this would be Granuler synthesis at its most basic.
- Things get really interesting when you start duplicating the grains, after rendering a sound down into thousends of grains, you can duplicate and compile them as a "Grain Cloud". By controlling the density and shape of this cloud, you can determine the exact nature of the sound and create huge, swirling landscapes. The cloud can be shaped not only by a controlled degree of overall randomization but also by the envelope settings of each grain.
--------------
Hope this helps . the synth they used in there tutorial was Kenaxis which is $49
and for the non-synth tutorial they used GRM tools freeze (http://www.grmtools.org/qt/files/Freeze.html) there shop was down but they have a 15-day trial.
there should be a free version of something similer on the net.

If you follow Richard Devine on Facebook, the guy posts tons of freeware granular synthesis stuff all the time (as well as payware & hardware).
Last one I grabbed recently was Amber X... nice & fun.

I really love the granulizer in FL studio. Just 3 or 4 parameters that always do what you want. Most of the granular tools out there are really "abstract".
just posted this http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=184603 about granular synthesis.

I've always had a hardt ime getting a nice sound with enough tone that I'd want to use from granular synth. It seems like the more you want to do with a sound the more flat and fizzy it sounds in the end. I got alchemy just sittin there. Probably just need a lot more work at it, but I get the same kinds of results from Reason's Malestrom.

the two synth;s your mentioning use multiple synthesis mode's at once. It might be possible to only use granulating though. But it might be worth to start out with a simple plugin.

Pretty much - one of the first samples I ever ran through it was Wiley's vocal from Business Man looped. Was mental

cant see vid cos im in work but is it the one where guy runs a drum loop through it, connects it to an xy controller and records the transformer noises into edison? i got a whole bank of samples i made after watching this! freakin awesome funwub wrote:legend4ry wrote:^ wow - you could easily make a whole transformer's film sound scape with that set up haha!

Yeah, that's the one

Re: Granular synthesis...
I've been messing around with Malestrom for a bit and have come to the conclusion that less is more in terms of the number of grains you oscillate between. You can make some patches with a lot of potential by using mod A to move the index with the motion of your targeted oscillator set to 0. This may already be common knowledge, but it's what I've learned on my own and hope it helps.I've always had a hardt ime getting a nice sound with enough tone that I'd want to use from granular synth. Re: Granular synthesis...
here are some granular sounds i made in skanner xt. https://soundcloud.com/mazimo/grains i want to layer them with massive but don't have any good sounding patches to do so. im also looking for a granular synthesizer that can make these same sounds but sustained. skanner xts parameters are really hard to manipulate. if anybody's got any suggestions let me know

Only granular engine you'll ever need. Blows the utter shit out of Alchemy's/Absynth's/Reaktor's granular capabilities, and it's completely free. It's actually surprisingly unknown considering it's sheer depth and power. One of the scenes proper secret little gems
