Is my promo mix wrong for N. American crowds?
Hey all,
I grew up in NY, but I got into electronic/dance music while living in northern europe. I've recently relocated to the midwestern US (for a work). A guy I met here just started running a "Dubstep Night" at a venue with a Funktion-One system. Last week, he put out an advertisement for 2 open DJ slots (for CD DJs only for some reason).
Here is the mix I gave him: Soundcloud...
tracklist is fully included. no dubs, no exlusives, no specials built into the mix. ... it is just dance music ... .
Back in Sweden, I played everything from 100 up to 180 in room two at the club I promoted, so exclusively dubstep felt a bit weird for me. Also, I checked out a few nights advertised as dubstep, but they seemed to play overcompressed trancy half-step music (I refuse to buy that nonsense). I basically made a digi mix that I feel should get the crowd here going, without playing tracks I think are trash.
Yes, I realize many of these tracks are old. But I'm pretty sure that they'll sound good to those who haven't heard them mixed.
My question is this: For those of you who live in North America, would a mix like this get the attention of a promoter in your town? Am I including too many "older tracks"? Is it "too deep" for this side of the atlantic?
im open to track/mix advice as always. lemme know.

I'm from London and I think it's good that you're promoting that side of dubstep over there.
Go ahead and use that mix mate, show them what it's really about.
Good luck.

As an American who appreciates quality bass music, I think your mix has great selections. Fuck the American tearout kiddies, there are people here who know good music when they hear it.

But fact remains, you can send the promoters here good mixes all you want, doesnt mean theyll book you.
Also, your promoter is named after a wrestling move. Not a sign that they like calm-ish music. They want to mosh. WWF soundtracks and shit.

Don't compromise your sound to fit in with what other people want!

Yeah, Dayton Ohio.
I've realized that a good mix does not necessarily get you booked in. I guess there are a lot more people wanting to play than I'd expected as well!
Either way, I'm not in a total rush to be out playing again. I just moved to this city two months ago.
