Ableton Live 8 / Acidentally disabled an envelope?

Post by Irvs » Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:08 am

Hey, I'm new to Ableton and I've just disabled an envelope that controls the rate of an LFO in Massive and I don't know how to re-enable it. I took a screen shot so I can just show you what I mean.

How do I turn it back on, I'm sure it's simple so I thought I'd just ask instead of stuffing around with all the controls.

thanks

see the yellow 'OVR' button at the top. just click the red button next to it. the button should stop showing red and your automations should be reset to normal! (they will go back to being red and not pink/brown)

this one used to drive me crazy haha especially when using massive as its really easy to do

Yeah so that works but then it disables my tracks in the Drums and Massive and when I turn those back on it disables the Rate automation again, it's only doing it to the rate though, no other parameters

That happens once you've saved your automation in Ableton and fuck with it. If you set automation and then change the parameters using the dial / knob / whatever you've automated, it will grey out and just play whatever you've set it to. Clicking the red button next to OVR enables you to quickly set it abck to the saved automation pattern, thats it

Hmmm, Is the issue that I did the automation in the arrangement section because I only just noticed that I can modify envelopes in the session view.

Would you normally create all your automations in session and then when your track is arranged then automate certain areas?

Thanks,

I do almost everything in arrangment view - the only real time I use the session view is for routing to sends / buses and doing finite mixdowns. I didn't even know you could change the automation in session view!?
Maybe i'm misinterpreting what you're talking about...

Haha yeah you can modify the envelope of a particular track, having a play with it made me realise that I'd rather just use arrangement view, much much easier.

Correct. Any one channel can only be playing either a clip in session or a clip in arrangement, not both at once. Even though in your case, there isn't necessary a conflict. You've just got to pair automation with midi/audio.

Automation in session view is tied to the clip (using the envelopes tab) whereas automation in arrangement is an entirely different thing. Using this in session view works fine, the problem is that because the envelope is tied to the clip, if you drag that clip from session to arrangement then the clip holds the automation in its envelope and you can still automate that same parameter using arrangement views automation tool.

IMO, in most cases, if you have automation going; you have an arrangement going and should be working in arrangement view. The caveat being if you intend to use the clip for live purposes. So basically, any automation that you think will eventually be in an arrangement and would be too tedious to re-create, you should do in arrangement view in the first instance.
I will also concede that for something like a wobble bass, the LFO modulation almost is part of the notes themselves and could be paired with the clip using the Envelopes tab.

Yeah, I still think it's easier in arrangements, only plus on the session view is the notes are there

The notes are there in arrangement view as well! Double click on your clip.
