Usually, in dubstep, the drop is all about IMPACT
How do you get impact? There are a number of ways to do this. Like others have mentioned above, making things quieter before they drop is good. Risers of any description ie white noise. Or maybe even take your main mid bass synth, strip it back and run a filter over it?

Personal fave of mine tho is silence. A bit of silence then BAM, offers the contrast from nothing, to all and gives you that impact

TBH tho everyone will have their own workflows and methods so its about finding yours using a combination of some of the methods in this thread

I just draw notes in and see how they sound and keep repeating this until one bar sounds good its basically a matter of experimentaton and just trialling different combinations.. I usually load all my synths up before I come to the drop then just edit them if needed and go mental :)

In breakdown sections I also like to add a good bit of atmospherics.
If you have reaktor theres a really good instrument in it called metaphysical, it completely mashes audio files, try playing around with it and then using a high pass and or band pass filter to work it into your breakdown.

My favorite way of doing drops is doing a 32 bar thing with a little melody going on, and then at the last 4 bars, only play the melody, but make it a little different, then BAM DROP YO ASS SON.
