Re: Is downloading films worse than downloading music?
I think another thing to mention is there's pretty much no reason to pirate tunes to find out if you'll like it, not with electronic music anyway. There's so many great DJ mixes and studio mixes/magazine and blog promos that it makes the option of pirating in this scene obsolete for me. I just keep up with other DJs I like and that's all I need to find out if I like a tune or not and to decide if I'll buy the vinyl or wav or both. If I don't like it, skip ahead in the mix, or just listen for 1:30-2:40 minutes until it mixes out.
There's really nothing like that with films, except trailers which usually use all the good scenes from a film anyway when it comes to action type movies or comedies especially.

I download music, films, software, tv broadcasts, e-books and occasionally vector packs and fonts. So do 90% of people on this forum not including the 9% who pretend they don't!
I know it's very much frowned up on but I don't really care. Fact of the matter is I have bought more DVDs, blurays, CDs, vinyl, books and indirectly other stuff like camera lenses etc. because I first downloaded it. If I like something I have downloaded I'll generally buy it at some point or keep my eyes open until I see it cheap / second hand.
However I'd love to go to the pictures more often but I resent paying £10 to get in and sit in a not an especially comfortable seat for two hours where I can only drink alcohol on the sly, go for a long walk if I want a smoke and heaven forbid if I should get hungry or thirsty as the cheques would bounce!
Which brings me onto something..... 'cos of the internet, a lot more people are seeing indie films that are never released at the big cinema houses but instead only get a small showing at indie cinemas. Am quite lucky as in there's one in Newcastle that is cheap and shows some good stuff.

Re: Is downloading films worse than downloading music?
the major problem I have with pirating is that it enables people to get hold of music that they wouldn't have if they had to pay for it, this leads to loads of DJ's having shitloads of music that they think is 'ok',
everyone seems to play ok music these days, a vinyl DJ jas to choose the exact records that he wants to play meaning they will play music that they genuinely think is amazing

what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

Re: Is downloading films worse than downloading music?
yes but it is annoying when people assume that because you are using mp3s you arent putting the effort into selecting tunes properlyPistonsbeneath wrote:i think youve missed the point againAllNightDayDream wrote:Because if you don't dj vinyl you obviously don't genuinely like music
granted some people do torrent shitloads so they end up with a huge selection of average music, but those people were never going to be respectable djs in the first place
there are people who use mp3 and still care and take hours selecting and deliberating over tunes (personally i do a lot more so than with vinyl, because vinyl is so expensive i know when a tune is so good that i need the vinyl immediately, whereas with mp3 because im so aware of how easy it is to buy throwaway tunes i spend far longer with them in my basket, deciding whether it is right/has shelf life or not)
this comment wasnt aimed necessarily at you pistons but just generally, i get annoyed when people assume people playing mp3s over vinyl dont try with their selection

You had me at 'comma'.
Re: Is downloading films worse than downloading music?
The questions too subjective, do I have an issue with downloading films? No. Do I download music that is available for purchase? No
I doubt there's much of a legal or ethical difference though I'm operating to my own moral framework and don't see any issue in taking films that are going to be available to me anyway tho I would rather pay for music given the margins the producers of the music I'm into are operating by.
I guess parallels could be drawn with those that would condemn theft from a house but have no issue with theft from a warehouse.

Re: Is downloading films worse than downloading music?
Surely it depends where you locate the problem in that particular example (DJs playing mediocre music)
It's down to promoters to book decent DJs so if the promoters are shit, don't go to their shows. Of all the things you could say about piracy, that holds very little water imo
