How do I keep my motivation up?

Post by DubMikey » Thu Jun 23, 2011 12:00 am

Hey all!
I've been taking a total break from producing the last 2 - 3 days, simply because my motivation is slipping away. The last couple of time I've been feeling like I am going nowhere with regards to producing.

So I was simply wondering; what keeps YOUR motivation up?

You're going to ebb and flow. I've learned this from 4 years of playing guitar and about 6 months of seriously producing. Just take a break when you feel like it, you don't need to produce all day.

I don't really have any other motivation besides me enjoying what I'm doing. When I get bored I drop it, I come back when I feel like it.

you should have motivation if it's really something you want to do.

The fact that I live in a rich country, in a middle class family who love and support me. As well as being exposed to such free educational resources, which will aid my success :Q:

Life is good. Realise this.

Doing anything too much gets boring. Take a break, and go back to it. Usually, you will feel refreshed and get back into it. If not, maybe it's just not right for you.

What keeps me motivated is trying to top myself and make something better each time, but create something interesting and that might mean something to somebody other than myself. That's all the motivation I need really.

If you feel like you have to push yourself to want to do it, maybe you don't really want to do it.

You might gain motivation if you try something new. Sometimes it can feel like more of a job and less like fun (assuming you aren't a professional). Just try something new. Take a new approach on it and you may get motivated again. Just my 2 cents :P

You really haven`t being doing it long.
Lacking motivation should not be confused with battling to create ideas.
Don`t let your lack of ideas limit your motivation.
Keep producing what you enjoy, ideas will come in time.

Get reading!

Reading provides food for thought.

What to read?

Read any of the topics listed in http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.p ... 13&start=0 (PS. scroll down past the n00b section for some more interesting stuff).

Or switch off and do some physical activities that stimulate your body. Visceral stimulation is very different to mental stimulation, and we actually need a balance of both to remain motivated, creative and happy in life.

Good luck! :W:

me i haven't produced any dubstep or anything for that matter (except for classical but just messing about) for at least 3 weeks. i know I can make a quality track if I tried and just sat down and though about it but i have been too lazy lately. but for motivation I would say you should sound design and get more into synthesis because most of the time (for me at least) when I get into some sound design and i'm designing patches I am always bound to end up making something cool and that immediately sparks off an idea, I have also heard that does the trick for a lot of other people as well. just get that right sound after probably 5 minutes to 5 hours really depends and boom you are bound to get an idea and you will be happy if it is a sound you like and hopefully you will have an idea or some motivation to work on a new track. i probably don't know what I am talking about i am really tired right now its late where I live. gonna go eat some food or something i think i have pizza bagels in the toaster oven. damn i forgot about those, need to reheat them. their probably cold right now. not really that hungry but I don't mind getting up and eating some. probably gonna do that right now. hhmm yea
