OK I'm going to close the survey now, I have to do some work on the statistics and all that for an assignment, so I cant really have more responses coming in because it'll mess up the percentages.
So big thanks to all you boys and girls (mostly boys!) who completed the questions. I have nearly a hundred fully completed responses over all, so as I said in about two to three weeks time I'll post up an executive summary of the results so you can see what people were saying.
Cheers again for your time, and also big shout to the mods for making this a sticky.

OK I deleted the invalid/incomplete responses, so I'll be working off the 83 fully completed surveys that I have.
Just a little taster of some of the larger percentages from the results:
96.4% of you are male
85.5% of you make little or no money (in the 0-20% range of yearly income) from production or artistic work
83.1% of you have sampled or used someone else's work without permission
As I said, more to come soon!

OK I converted just the results into a PDF file and uploaded it here, if anyone would like to read it. At the moment I am working on analysis of relationships between different answers (e.g. if people have been publishing on the internet for longer, are they more inclined to let others sample their work?) but I am not sure if people would be interested/bothered with all that statistical jargon... if you are let me know and I'll post up the full version when I'm finished it in a few days time.

I think the sticky is due to expire on this tomorrow, so it will probably 'sink in the mud' in the next few days. I'd just like to say thanks to everyone who filled it in - at the moment I've recieved 69 fully complete surveys (unfortunately I cant count the uncompleted ones), but it will be left open for a while, so I'll post the results up in mid May after its closed.
Thanks again for your time (and cheers to the mods for making it a sticky, I owe you all a pint)
OI..YOU..are you gonna flash bang doe...

i think the 'layman' (dumb word to use) can tell the difference between loefahs stupidly heavy production and something thats taken little time and experience to craft. thats why loefah is a don and n most the other people else makin minimal 1/2 step tracks havent really been able to touch him...drgk wrote:Shonky wrote:
As far as spending an entire day on one snare sound, someone is either exaggerating or wasting their time. NO audience member will EVER be able to tell the goddamn difference (except MAYBE other pros). I'm inclined to think of drum and bass, a genre that has alienated a large portion of the audience by making the focus of the music based on production values that the average non-musician can't understand (ex. he has 117 drum loops layered on this track, THAT IS SO AWESOME!). To the layman it sounds like a bunch of noise.
This is something that inspired me the moment I heard dubstep. slow and steady, easy to hear the intricacies of, easy to relate to for people who DON'T come to it from the dnb world.
just cos someone doesnt entirely understand the intricacies of a track doent mean that they wont still make em impact on them.
i think you need to give 'audiences' more credit.
